Your to young to be drinking coffee young-un. But since your a hard-headed youth I'll give you my two cents.
Flavored coffee sucks if you want a milkshake buy one don't attemp to protray that sweet creamed up stuff with a little coffee added as real coffee. (Sorry Glenn, it's just an opinion :) )
Dunkin does indeed have good coffee. Maxwell house is what I drank for thirty years and in hindsite I think I drank it because my parents drank it. I found that Folgers was much better once I opened my mind. But the best coffee I've come about in this country is eight O'clock . It's a little more pricey, about four cents an ounce but it's good.

    Arbor Day Coffee

Shade-grown, so it's not as bitter as a lot of other coffees, and it's environmentally freindly since they don't have to clear-cut rainforest to grow it. It's all we drink around here any more.

If you want flavour...add syrup. Flavoured beans are usually flavoured to mask the awful taste, because they're the lower-quality ones. Not that beans that come into the US aren't already the lowest quality, but those are bottom-of-the-barrel.

  9. eric06

    eric06 Sergeant Major

so for quality, is it better to buy the beans from a store and grind them my self or to buy the grindings in a can?

    eric

Start with the beans. There are 2 kinds: Robusto and Arabica. Robusto is grown at a lower elevation, has more caffeine, and is what is used in most mainstream coffees sold in the store such as Folgers, Hills Bros, Maxwell house, MJB, Sanka, etc. Those coffees also are not roasted as long, so the full flavor is not released, and more caffeine stays in. They are then put in a can and stored there for 1 or 2 years, so even the "fresh" coffee of Folgers is not really "good to the last drop" nor does it "taste good like it should".

Arabica beans are a higher quality bean, and companies such as Peetes, Starbucks, and others start with these. They bring them in green, roast them longer, and more evenly, and then bag them immediatly. The coffee you get from these is much better, and can be made much stronger for a nice full flavor.

There are different levels of roasts. Light roast, medium roast, and dark roast. Light is coffees such as Kona. Medim would be a nice Italian blend. Dark is a French roast, such as Costa Rican. It all depends on your tastes.

Flavored coffees are awful, because they simply use extracts to add a semblence of flavor, which ends up translating to a smell as it brews, and not much flavor, save a strong alcoholic burn of sorts from the extract.

Syrups are the way to go if you like flavor. Torani makes all kinds of syrups, which you add after the coffee is in your cup, along with cream, sugar, or what have you, if you prefer these things.

There are several ways to make the coffee. Ever had camp coffee? Boiling water over a fire, grounds thrown right in, then poured into your cup on a chill morning. Gotta deal with the sludge at the bottom, but man! it tastes good!
Well, French Press, or Plunger Pot, is a recreation of this. The grounds, which are ground into a medium grind, go into a big press, hot water is poured over it, and stee[ed fpr about 10 minutes, at which time the plunger is pushed down. The plunger is a screen filter thing which pushes all the sludge to the bottom, leaving you free to enjoy the coffee without all the grit! This is probably the best cup of coffee known to man.
Espresso is finely ground coffee, very nearly a powder, which is compacted into a small cup which fits on a special machine which shoots steam through the grounds into a small shot glass. Mix this with some hot water, and you have an Espresso and water. Mix it with steamed milk and a small amount of froth, and you have a latte. Add an extra shot and some vanilla, and you have a really great cup of coffee!
Of course you can also do the drip method, using a basket filter or cone filter. The coffee should be medium to fine ground (not powder) and made with 2 tablespoons of coffee to every 6 ounces of cold fresh water. This is the easiest coffee to make, and easier to clean up then the french press of the espresso. I've learned to make a really good cup of coffee using my 15 year old Black and Decker basket drip coffee maker!

This ought to get you started and keep you busy. And don't let people tell ya you can't add cream and sugar. If you want to add that stuff, there's no rule that says you can't. The so called "purists" say that "real men drink it black" or what ever their cute slogans might be, but those same people have ketchup with their fries, dressing on their salad, salt and pepper on their eggs, and milk on their cereal. Tell em to eat chocolate without sugar if they are concerned about purity! :D

Here's to you! (raises a cup pf Joe to EricO6)

thank you eclayton, this is exactly what i was looking for. so for a better quality bean i should buy it from starbucks? the darker the roast, does that add more caffine, or is that just flavor preference? right now i am using a drip basket with some maxewell house stuff my dad bought, it works for me at 5 am so i don't complain, though i think i am going to start experimenting with different ones to find a nice flavor. and yes i add sugar, becuase i don't care what anyone else says, almost everyone in my 7th period comp. sci. class puts milk in there's ( i started that tradition in that class, was drinking coffee in there one day beucase it helps me concentrate and they all started doing it). so again thank you and i will probably be asking you some more questions as my endevaors into coffee expand, and glenn i will be asking you some questions before i go to startbucks. night guys.

Well we drink Folgers around these here parts, but for a good rich cup of coffee I suggest trying some Community Coffee. They have some very nice Chicory Blends that are very good. I have my sister send it to us, as you can only get it in states that border Louisiana.

I like it so much I even painted a Nascar skin for it. hehe

It's just flavor preference. The darker roasts actually have slightly less caffeine because the beans have been roasted longer for deeper flavor. The lightest blends are your best bet for caffeine (Breakfast Blend, House Blend, etc.) My personal Starbucks favorite is the Verona. It's perfectly balanced between the fulness of the dark roasts and the caffeine of the light roasts.

EClaytons bang on the money.... go for the pure beans Arabica, Costa Rican, Kenyan etc the mixes that Maxwell House give you really dont give you the full taste of the bean.

I could also say that if you don't drink your coffee black with no sugar, then you are also not getting the full taste of the coffee aroma, but this is my view as I have drunk very strong black coffee for 10yrs+ I mainly drink Espresso

one of my fav coffees has to be http://www.lavazza.com/default/channel/index_eng.jsp

Halo, have you ever tried Turkish coffee? Super strong, thick, almost like sludge (the coffee is boiled in the water, I'm not sure what grind or for how long) I think people add suger right to the coffee as it's boiling. If you like seriously strong coffee, you ought to give this a shot, pardon the pun! :D

When I was in Kenya it was hard to find coffee to drink Tea, very strong tea was the drink of choice. It was drank with a large dose of heavy cream. Koi I think was the name of it.
We used to see racks and racks of drying coffee beans in their various stages of drying. It looked like racks upon racks of M&M's because of the many colors they change to at different times of the process.

Coffee rules. I dunno who said Dunkin Donuts was God or the equivalent, but around here they suck. Well I am kinda hooked on their breakfast sandwiches, but that's a different story. The Border's Books & Music here sells some kickass beans :D They can keep the flavored stuff though, the only flavor I like my coffee is hot ;)
