A few days ago I updated my computer from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional. However, the color quality of my monitor only displays color at (lowest) 4 bit now. And I cannot change it because 4 bit is the only option in the list of color qualities. Also, my desktop does not have any icons on it. I know that there is nothing wrong with the mechanics of my monitor because I am able to log onto my previous version of windows, and the color quality there is normal. What could be wrong, and how can I fix it?

What does the XP Pro have for a display adapter in Device Manager? What does the display adapter show when you look at its properties and driver?

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System (or click on See basic information about your computer)
Then click on Hardware > Device Manager

You will see a list of hardware and information about your computer system.
Right click on Display adapter (you might have to click on the + if there is one to expand the selection) and click on properties
to see information about the display adapter and driver. Click on cancel to exit these windows when you are through viewing them.
It's not as hard as it may seem.

You should see your video card listed under display adapter and the driver version under the driver tab in properties.
If they are not what was in the Home edition then you may need to reload the video card (display adapter) driver.

I have fixed by color problem, but now my cd-rom drive open and closes by itself. I have scanned for viruses using Norton and Ad-Ware SE Personal, but it keeps doing it. Can someone tell me the name of this virus, and the exact location of it on my computer?
