    I aquired a new virus,the google redirect , piece of .... :guns

went through the removal steps and everything looks fine now :major

anyway, when I ran ComboFix it told me I have Avira antivirus and that it was active - yet I know I used to have it and had deleted it properly long ago with CCleaner - or so I thought

I searched for it but found nothing and ComboFix did run properly

so where could Avira be hiding and how do it fix that or should I just leave it alone?

    Hi,

I know the way Avira labeled is kind of confusing, but this is actually a specific removal tool for the following malware infections:
    • Sober.J/P/Y
    • TR/Agent.imh/its
    • TR/Drop.Agent.qna.2/Agent.qna.1
    • TR/PSW.Delf.AH/Kates.C.25
    • TR/Spy.Delf.tge/Banker.AATZ/Banker.AATZ.1/Banker.AATZ.2/Banker.AATZ.3
    • W32/Stanit.A
    • Worm/NetSky.P

ComboFix is detecting Avira in cache of the Security Center.

Here is one way to clear the security center cache:

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3189/windowsrepair.gif Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now open Repair_Windows.exe
    • Go to Start Repairs tab.
    • Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
      • Repair WMI
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.

Well, duh is me.Thanks for the correction, and my apologies for the confusion.

Chalk it up to a bad reference on another site in which it, calling a program the "Avira Removal Tool," was really talking about Avira's Reg Cleaner to clean up Avira's leftovers. I didn't download the tool at the time but later I did and it then became apparent that it was the Reg Cleaner. Before downloading it, though, I had passed on the wrong name by copying and pasting "Avira Removal Tool" from the site into MG search so that MG could be the source, little realizing that "Avira Removal Tool" was a valid name for a different program. So, I ended up doing the same thing that the reference site did. Again, my apologies.

No need to apologize. I too have downloaded the "Avira Removal Tool" thinking it was their Uninstall Tool. :-D

I do not think an uninstall tool for Avira actually exists. :(

Ya know, Avira really should have a removal tool for their AV programs like McAfee and Norton do. Many are the times that an incomplete Avira uninstall has caused probs w/ ComboFix and other programs....

(Avira? You guys read this forum? ;) )

hey .. many thanks for the info :cool .. but after over 4 hours of repair yesterday I'm mot really feelin too ambitious to tackle this right now .. I'm still keeping an eye on things - so far just a few minor issues but no redirects

it would have been far easier to replace the hard drive

still planning another full check and probably a defrag as well :major
