Combo server-client FTP software now available?

When I first started using an FTP server and teaching people to use one, six years ago, an FTP server and an FTP client were two entirely different animals, and there was no such thing as an installable program that would act as both an FTP client (lets you download from a server or upload to a server or move files from one server to another server) AND as an FTP server (lets other people upload files to you and lets other people download files from you).

Is that all still the case? Are there any FTP combos out there now? I've tried Google, but I keep just getting EITHER clients OR servers.

Well, generally not. Unless its with a filesharing program (eDonkey or somthing like that). Most people who want to use FTP sites (browse & download) dont want to run their own FTP server. Maybe someone should put a package together for someone who wants just that (for sharing files with a friend, on a LAN, etc.)

Filezilla is about as close as you're going to get. That's more like a suite. It does allow remote admin of the ftpd from the ftp client, though.

Okay, guys, many thanks. I didn't know about Filezilla at all. Looks like a slightly integrated approach, but they're still two independent programs.

I've had a difficult spell of work, so haven't been around for a while, robo.

I think you've all answered the question. If I continue to teach FTP beginners about using FTP server software at home on your own machine to set up a resource that you can control admission to and privileges for, it'll still be a different topic entirely from using an FTP client to get, put, and transfer files with a server at the OTHER end.

It wasn't a very interesting question, but your help will help me to avoid making an error of ignorance (in print) in some teaching materials.
