I was at this place doing a malware removal job, but there was no internet connection. Usually I would just download the latest combofix at the time.

But no problem, I had an month old version on my flash drive.

I tried to run the versoin that I had, it said that it was outdated and (forgive me if details are fuzzy, I'm going from memory) it said something like Say Yes to exit, or no to run in reduced functionality.

It was all I had, so of course I said no to run in reduced functionality, but instead of running in reduced functionality, it exited itself and then deleted itself from my disk.

Why? Why did it not do what it said it would do?

    Thanks

You need a fresh copy. ;) In fact it is dangerous to use outdated copies. For example, there are probably some copies still floating around which has a bug in it which deletes alot of system files/folders, and it can be difficult to sort out unless you know how. Use current versions!

Well, I use a fresh copy when I can, but in this case I could not. But that doesn't change the fact that it did not behave the way that it said it would. Why?

It's preventing you from running it because the version could be buggy as I said, it is just not wise to run an outdated copy. You will need to get a current version on disk or something and transfer it to the sick machine.

Well, I was not able to do it. That's it. I'm doing a job, and I only get one shot at it. I already said, if I can, I use a current copy, but that was not possible in this case. That is is not current, is not a valid excuse for the program lying about its behavior.
It is not buggy, I have seen this exact same thing in my own personal experiments under virtual box at home.

I have already told you what I think. Not that you are interested anyway. If you are not able to carry around with you a set of basic tools for malware removal on some form of removable media then you are going to come unstuck if this is what you do for a living. How do you know for certain that Combofix was lying? You don't.... Go back to the clouds... thread closed. Not interested.
