i got a new dell computer with windows xp home edition. my husband asked me to transfer his address book from the old dell windows 98 computer where he was using outlook express to comcast email so it could be accessed on the new computer. there was surprisingly little information on how to do that. anyway, i finally found a way to do it but you had to change the file to some wieird file extension. then i sent it to comcast. when he accessed the address book through the comcast home page, it had multiple entries for the same people. and when he tried to delete or edit any entry, he gets an error message saying some entries cannot be deleted or edited. log out and load again. something he has done many times. when he tried to edit he gets another entry whcih also cannot be deited or deleted. the bottom line is it takes forever to boot up his email and the address book is nearing capacity even though most are multiple entries. he wants to use outlook on the new computer, but is afraid to transfer the file again thinking either something else will happen or it will still have the multiple entry glitches. the odd part about this is i transferred mine the same way and i do not have any of the problems he is experiencing. my address book can delete and edit. and yes he is the main name on the comcast account if that makes a difference. we still use the old windows 98 computer and i have a laptop with windows xp home. when he tries to access emailfrom comcast on the other computers he has the same problems. make any explanations simple please, i am old and not a computer guru. thanks.

For starters, I don't think this has anything to do with Comcast.....

The next thing you want to do is 'export' all your settings to either a '.pst' file (if available, it may not be), or you should be able to export to "comma separated values". Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook should recognize these without issue. If yours is working, leave it be, try your husbands again.

    Good luck.

not fun if i can't bash comcast! i'm your worst nightmare when it comes to explaining something. i went to my husband's address book and where it said export, i hit that box and the options it gave me were
    palm pilot ABA
    ms outlook CSV
    ms outlook explorer CSV
    netscape communicator LDIF

somehow i do not think this is where you want me to be. before i try and export to outlook, i have to fix the email on the comcast home page because he sometimes is out of town and accesses his email from the home page. so he needs the address book available from the comcast home page also. then when i get that working it should be easy to get it to outlook on our home computer. the old computer that i sent the email from is out of state so i can't access that either. please tell me specifically what to clik on first to get to something i can export settings to. i have no idea where to go to do that. or how to do a .pst file or comma separated values. help, help, help!

what program are you trying to import the address book to?
if comcast game you a simple pop email account yourname@comcast.net you can set up a new email account through Outlook Express on the new dell for that account.

then, in the old outlook, export the addressbook to a .csv file, bring it to the new computer, and import it through Outlook express by simply locating the file.

if you need help setting up the new outlook account, let us know.

er, oops, just read you want the address book accessible form the webmail client also...

that's right. i need the address book that was imported from the old windows 98 outlook express to the new computer via the comcast web page, to be accessible on the comcast web page email. since the addresss book has so many multiple entries it is a nightmare to use. i do not understand why my husband's email had these problems, except he is the main person on the account. mine does not have that problem, although there is an issue in that the box the address book is in, is too small and some categories are impinging on each other. you cannot resize the box by moving the cursor to the edge and "pulling" it

comcast after multiple calls and six weeks had elapsed said they believed the address book file was corrupted and they would delete the address book, allowing us to start over. They said they would take care of the problem in 12 hours. A week later they deleted the address book, and everything works fine for now.
