Comcast switching to Norton, worth it?

Comcast gives full Norton Security Suite for free now (used to be Mcafee).

I recently had a nasty virus fly right into the system through Mcafee without so much as a hiccup, so I'm beginning to believe the people who say Mcafee and Norton aren't all that good.

Wondering what people think....if you were getting full Norton for free, is it worth installing or is there another free option that's better? (particularly at blocking drive-by downloads & similar stuff)

Avast, AntiVir or Avg much perferred.

Protect my computer from viruses : (Pick only one)
    AVG Free Edition
    AntiVir
    Avast! Home Edition

Gotta agree with samtal. IMHO Nortons is the worst. Just horrid. Many free anti virus and anti spyware programs that are so much better.

Pay to use Norton when AVG FREE does the same thing at no cost? Why pay?

Tony, the deal is Comcast gives you Norton FREE also...for as long as you use them as an ISP.

That's why I posted the question, with all prices equal (FREE) is Norton worth it?

Comcast, is probably billing you for Norton in monthly installments. It's a tie up. If you opt out of Norton, Comcast will still bill the same amount(if they drop the subscription, amount - awesome). They won't reveal, the internal corporate deal they have going with Norton, period. I'd go with Avira or Avast..

    Cheers..

not how it works. Comcast offers it free as a subscriber to their internet service. you have to get it through their website, it's not automatic or mandatory.

I am currently using it, and I like it. I have also used avg, avast, avira, and mcafee in the past. Is it better/worse than others? i don't really know. I do know that newer versions of norton are way better than past versions.

it's not nearly the resource hog it used to be, and it's been getting good reviews for it's security.

I am on Comcast and use Avira AntiVir (free one) if that tells you anything...

P.S. I like the new version of Avira. Still light on resources.

I have Comcast for almost 6 years and I refuse to use whatever they offer for free.
I ran free AVG for many years, then when it got too bloated for my taste, I switched to free Avira AntiVir.
I'd advise running one of the three free ones Avast, AVG or Avira before McAfee or Norton.

Years ago I gave both Norton (pre-Symantec ownership) and McAfee money but no more.
