... display an HTML file in the command prompt?

I know I've seen it before...

You go into command prompt, give the command or commands, and it would display the html file... obviously as text, with some information before it and so forth.

Does anyone know what it is/how to do it? I can't remember where I saw it and I can't remember how to do it...

the file is on a webserver... so...

simply typing the address isn't going to work.

say I wanted to view www.google.com/index.html

putting "type www.google.com/index.html" will give me "the syntax of the command is not correct"

I must be doing something wrong.

If your trying to view files on other servers via the command line you dont own or have shell access to im not sure how to do that, other then trying to telnet google.com 80, then do "get" but that only will return the first page of the site.

Hmm... I don't really remember that many details, so I may be getting mixed up on what it was actually doing.

    Thanks for the info though.

I wish I could remember the place I first saw it so that I could see exactly what he/she was doing.

I'm pretty sure it did use the get command somewhere in the process.

    I'm using Vista Home Premium.

I'm not sure what the server was running in the example of the first time I saw it...

It was such a long time ago... I think. I don't even remember where I found it.. It might have been in my web design class, might have been on some web design website, or might have been somewhere totally un-related and I just stumbled across it.

You don't use/start telnet through the command prompt do you? I should know this but... I don't know. Edit: Never mind about telnet I found out doing a quick search. Telnet is a separate program. Unless what I'm reading is lying.

Well sorta, all windows os's have telnet, but in vista was disabled by default as its not a very common tool for the average user. Using add remove windows components can easy re-add it. But yes its a command line tool. Or there are seperate programs that can function as a telnet client, like putty.

Ahh yes. I see that now. I was reading in Windows Help and only read the first sentence or so. It goes on to explain that it's a command line tool that isn't installed by default(at least in Vista). I guess I should read the whole thing next time. lol. Thanks for the answers, maybe I'll be able to find out what I'm thinking of.. May be something entirely different than what I remember it to be.

Does windows have a built-in utility/client for ssh? Or would I need to download a client?
