I'll try to make this as short as I can....

A while ago, my computer died and I took it to a computer repairman, who "tested" it, and told me that "everything was fried and needed replaced". The motherboard, the processor, the hard drive....even the memory! Not knowing anything about computers, I went along with this and proceeded to pay him to replace everything in my computer. Feeling uneasy, I asked for the old parts back. He reluctantly gave them to me after explaining that they were "no good at all"!
Anyway, I recently picked up another computer from someone who was throwing it out to the trash, and decided to pop some of the old parts in it to try it out. Guess what....the memory works fine! So I popped the hard drive in and fired it up. It immediately runs through the BIOS page and all the start up tests, but then starts up Go Back and asks me for a command prompt (black screen with C:// etc.) I don't know what to type there, but sure would like to know if my hard drive is any good.....I have pictures of my sons birth, etc. on there that (I know...duh!) weren't backed up! Needless to say, my wife wasn't happy!
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

When I was using Go Back I wrote a diskette with the Go Back start up program. It's an emergency recovery startup diskette. Do you have one?

I'm sure I had one somewhere, but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. I'll try looking after work today.

Is there any other way to know if the hard drive is any good or not?

    Thanks!

You could connect your old hard drive into your repaired computer either as a primary slave (you need to change the jumpers on the drive) or as a secondary master. Then boot up your machine and see if you can see the drive in windows explorer, if you can then you should be able to transfer your photos etc onto your new drive.

I hooked up the hard drive into another computer as a slave and it freezes the computer, until I unplug the power to the hard drive. Then everything resumes as normal. I don't think the hard drive is any good, but I don't know anything about computers, so how do I know! Any other suggestions? Thanks!

It would certainly seem that the hard drive is faulty if it freezes your machine. Sorry but it would take a specialised company to try to recover any data you may have on the drive and that usually means it's going to be expensive.

Did you change the jumpers on the drive correctly? Did you connect the drive to the same cable as your other dirve?

I changed the jumper (there was only one) to Slave as it was listed on the front of the drive. I then plugged it into the extra cable jack that was coming from the other hard drive (or going to the other hard drive). Was that correct?

There is usually two cables comming out of the motherboard. Try plugging both hard drives into the same cable.

Go Back, is a special tool, that will resort to a previous state of the OS, when one presses the spacebar upon reboot or turning on their computer.

For the other suggestions, to make it simple.....

I'd have both drives as MASTER. On TWO sepereate cables.....
