Comodo Firewall growing?

    Is Comodo Firewall becoming bloated?

The most recent update (Version 3.0.13.268) here on MG shows over 31.34 MB of space.

My original (Version 2.3.5.62) was only 7.7 MB.

I have not downloaded the updated version because of this.

One reason I switched from Zone Alarm was because ZA had become bloated.

Is it related to making a firewall for Vista?

    Thanks.

This is true regarding just about every application out there, but in particular "firewall" as well as antivirus types.

    Examples:
As you posted ZoneAlarm 2.0 (1.5 MB) increased to ZoneAlarm 6.5.737.000 (13 MB)
Even the Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.4 (2.1 MB) increased to Kerio Personal Firewall 4.2.2 (5.3 MB)

This even applies applies within the program version numbers... Examples:
Sygate Personal Firewall 5.0 was 5.0 MB - Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6.2808 increased to 8.8 MB
    AVG Anti-Virus 7.0.298 (10 MB) increased to AVG Anti-Virus 7.5.441 (18 MB)

As a big fan of 'freeware' types of software applications, I'm often amazed at this more recent trend of maxing out the size of such programs. Long gone are the "good 'ole days" when just about every freeware program developer released a "lite" as well as "full" (as in far more intensive) version upgrades of their applications.

Developers almost always tout these increases in the sizes of their apps as "progress" however instead of becoming better applications over time; they often seem to become worse. It often seems that - as these apps become bigger and bigger and more bloated - they also time and again times include tons of useless and/or silly things that hardly anybody would want or actually need to use.

The reality for many users is that these updated and upgrades of software products frequently end up being more bloated; and far more memory intensive, becoming slower and sluggish, as well as more complex as well as far more difficult to set up and laborious to navigate and use.

Unfortunately I do not see this trend reversing itself anytime soon. Although on the positive side (especially regarding security apps) one undeniably good thing that comes with new versions of software are the fixes users receive for the various security holes uncovered, sometimes very serious ones.

    Good Luck!

Bloated, a kind of overused term in computing, while an app may grown in install size it may not equate to ram and cpu usage.

Many apps as mentioned come with various add-ons that you may or may not wish to install, plus the components that are needed to be protected are varied these days, majority or a large portion of the applications size these days comes from fancy GUIs, folk love sparkle over a DOS looking menu.

Sadly in the Security area and you are right on the ZA issue of size, its trying to be everything at once, AV, FW & AS.... thankfully Comodo have made it easy to turn off or not install the Defence+ application.

While programming for Vista will add some more size its not the only factor, it now has to be compatible for both 32bit and 64bit OSes in XP or Vista, these days PCs are more than capable of handling large apps.

Get a router. I dont run a firewall, though I have Windows Firewall on for kicks. Using a hardware router is much better protection anyway and eliminates that extra bloat.

Yep. I agree 100%. I recently went this route and actually noticed a slight increase in the responsiveness of my web surfing activities. It could be my imagination, but it seems that pages are opening just a bit quicker, and downloads are finshing sooner, now that I'm not running a software firewall.

Thanks for the input from everyone. I try to keep programs (and resources used) at a minimum. It looks like it's not easy to do. These "upgrades" come with new features not needed but also some improvements. (+ and -)
