comp lockin up need help

my comp locks up and freezes with sound repeating then display goes off but the comp still runs. have to manually restart it. i tried catalyst 4.4 and the omega 4.4 version and no luck. HELP ME i dont have the money to drop on another VID card. anyone have any extras or know how to fix this, i have tried almost all video card drivers with no luck

i just tried the new bios for my board and the new hyperion AGP drivers neitehr prodivding a new outcome

specs are

amd 64 3000+
ATI radeon 9600 xt
asus k8v

 

i forgot to mention this was while playing counter-strike i will test it for warcraft 3 when i get home i belive im playing cs in open gl

 

its only in CS that htis happens runnin windows xp with SP1

 

i tried the new catalyst drivers and i get a vpu revocery error but i was just gettin freeze in CS only before trying the new ones the vpu recovery happens in all games

 

things to try:

make sure your not overclocking your video card (if you are) or lower it a little and see if that helps.

make sure fast writes are off (smartgart)
make sure your running your video card in 4X mode instead of 8X
try increasing agp voltage (in bios)
try different drivers i recommend cats 3.7

well i swithced to 4.2 drivers because i heard they were more stable, and instead of gettin vpu errors it just locks up in counter-strike only, war3 which was gettin vpus works perfectly.

 

fan is spinning dont know what the heat sink is

 

now im getting vpu erroer recovery in both again all games

 

i did this and war3 does not lock up but CS freezes but not vpu error that i know of it doesnt pop up. i tried re isntalling and using different modes and resolutions.

 

i take that back i still get vpu recovery errors in both however i can keep playing War3 it justs locks up for 20 seconds

 

If I remember correctly some people experience problems with VPU recover enabled( lock-ups/crash to desktop), when playing certain games... In fact I run with it off. Run a search for VPU recover at Guru3d and DriverHeaven. Also check for new game patches and hardware drivers.

no i even tried underclocking the card

no virus i tried a different video card both a fx 5200 and a ATI radeon 8500 work but they both do use different drivers

right now however only counter-strike is lockin up for some reason i am able to play warcraft fine

 

like i said an 8500 and a fx 5200 worked fine in my machine, however i took my card up to a local store and asked them to test the hardware and they said it was perfect.

 

well the latest bios is the 1003 for the k8v se deluxue and on defaults not help

i have 4.5 installed and when i attached my 8500 it said new software and had me delete 4.5 and install the last one that supported 8500 which was 3. somethin and it worked fine but it didnt work with the 9600xt

 

anything else i can do master?

 

itsa 420 w and i tested both CS and war3 when i installed the other vid cards and it worked

 

this is a more indepth what is happening ill be playing a game and it will freeze when i hit alt tab it pops up a vpu recovery error asks if i want to send report then i can alt tab back into the game howerver if i turn off the erroer report or the vpu it just freezes
