Hello. I have just bought new parts for my PC and assembled it all. I plugged it in, turned it on and popped in the Win xp cd and during setup it keeps shutting down.

All fans are spinning except one on the back of the case, which has been broke for a while(old case) but both side panels are open so i wouldn't think its overheating.

    Here's my setup:

    ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo
    Radeon HD 4550
    Intel CORE 2 Duo E8400
    2G Corsair 1066mhz RAM
WD Caviar SE EIDE Hard drive 320gb
    700W rocketfish PSU
    generic dvd drive

Everything is new except the dvd drive and case. This is my first time assembling a computer, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like the power supply fan. You need a new power supply with a working fan.

Its a different fan. back case fan.

Some case fans, especially those on servers, are wired to disallow OS startup unless they are running to speed.

Check you have the CPU heatsink fan connected to the correct supply - sometimes they are interchangeable connectors with the rear fan - even though the CPU fan is running, the controller may be running it at too slow a speed for safety.

Ok going to check... So you guys think this is definately a heat issue? since its a new HD, ruling out virus.

Ok, i got that fan in back of the case running, but the problem persists. I have also swapped RAM with no help.

One thing i have noticed is that if i just let it sit in bios it'll run for longer, but still shuts off. When i try to install something it shuts down faster, would that be CPU heat? or Hard Drive?

I had a very similar problem to this, swapped PSU, ram, cpu and it still persisted. Got a cheap used motherboard (socket A) off ebay and everything has been working perfectly since. Did not expect it to be the board and it might not be your problem, but it shows that it's not just about ram and psu, some motherboards can be faulty.

It was the cpu cooling system. cpu was at 90C. Got a new heatsink/fan and its working great.

They need to step up and stop including those plastic POS's with cpu's.

    Thx for the help everyone!
