Comp uses ram while idle..............'.

One of my comps that a friend is using is acting weird. The system is a Dell 2400 w/XP Home, 1 gig ram, has 40 gig hd dr, Has PcCillin secutity for anti-virus and firewall. It uses up most of the ram as she works at the comp. starts out at about 500 meg (I have Freemem installed) and can get as low as 50 meg. It also seems to eat the ram while setting idle. I have ran the anti-malware and other stuff I have installed on it and found nothing. Any ideas? Need more info? thanks in advance.
