    Hello All,

I was using my Canon Powershot S400 camera the other day and I got a E51 error message.

I had a 32MB Canon Compact Flash card in the camera at the time, when I turned it on to view the pictures, I got the error message. When I turned the camera off then back on again it showed that there were no images on the card however there was only room enough to take 5 more pictures. To me this indicates the unviewable pictures are still there.

Does anyone know of free software out there that I could try to perhaps recover the photos. Any suggestions would be apreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Global:mad:

Have you tried it with a card reader on a PC? That's how I do all my digital photos now. I bought a multi-card reader for $15. It reads 7 or 8 card formats.

Just used this program on a flash card that was accidentally deleted.

    PC INSPECTOR smart recovery 4.5

The program worked great and got everything back. Awesome price also.

The software peterparker suggests is the one I had used sucessfully for many years when in the photo industry,

however Canon are a little more of a PITA than other cameras, why because they dont allow you to plug your camera into your PC and use the mass driver ( comes with XP ) to view the card as a removable drive, so to recover from the card you will need to have a USB CF card reader to allow recovery ( ran into this a few years back and this week on a new Canon camera so I know they havnt changed this awkward route ) BUT it was sucessful when I borrowed a card reader and plugged it into USB, which then sees the CF card as a removable drive.

Thank you for all of your suggestions.

I downloaded the program PeterParker suggested and ran into the problem you spoke of Halo. I'm going to borrow my brothers card reader tonight and give this a try.

When I plug the card reader into a USB port, should it come up in the list for drive options?

    Thanks again everyone.

    I LOVE THIS SITE!

Hi Global, yes it should.. are you running XP, if so it should load a mass driver once the card reader is plugged in but also if your Bro has a driver disk for his card reader get that also.. but only install the driver if Xp doesnt install a driver when first plugged in.

I dont remember having to install a driver for the USB card reader I used... but good luck :)
