I've read the related posts, but just want some confirmation. I have a Compaq 7000 tower system with ATX form factor motherboard, Intel 1.3 GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 256 MB Rambus RAM, 1 HD, 1 CD. I checked the PS, and it seems OK. When I plug in the power cord and press the ON button, the PS fan, the CPU fan and the case fan all come on. In a few seconds the case fan spins down and the HD spins up, the keyboard lights all blink once. Nothing on the video and no beeps. I can't see a place for an internal speaker, so I'm kinda hoping the sound card would echo any system beeps.

After the initial HD spinup, I don't hear any other HD activity that might lead me to believe the system was booting. Removing the RAM and all the PCI and video cards doesn't ellicite any change in behaviour. I got a new CPU but that didn't change anything either.

I'm thinking that the motherboard is cooked, but not sure what else may be as well. This system came from my nephews (who of course have no explanation of how it came to not be working...) and was just totally full of dust bunnies. It's so bad, the USB ports are plugged with dust! Which is why I wonder what else is cooked.

I can either buy a reman Compaq motherboard for about $30 or assume everything is toast and buy another ATX or microATX motherboard/CPU combo for about $150, and just reuse the CD, HD, PS and case.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Jay

yea .. just salvage what you can ... i'd get an asus, msi, gigabyte or abit and not a compaq one myself, just make sure it will fit your case

sounds like it would be a good excuse to upgrade your system as well :D
