Compaq Connections seems redundant with HP software

I have a Compaq Presario notebook PC I acquired in July 2007. I removed some of the miscellaneous HP software that was installed on it but left some things. One item I have not removed is called Compaq Connections. Many months ago, I searched for some info on it but did not find much. But now, I found a detailed FAQ on HP's website. See http://www.hp.com/united-states/cpc/presario/connections_faq.html#19

I've had it disabled via msconfig for months and, now that I've found the above info, I think I can say it's clearly is not an essential software.

I understand it's purpose is to automatically notify me of updates from HP, specifically for my model, or least a series of Compaq models. But, it seems redundant because I occasionally get an alert from HP updates. So, apparently, if I enable Compaq Connections, I'll have two processes running in the background that have a similar purpose.

The FAQ cited above says that Compaq Connections uses very little resources, so maybe that's not an issue. Still, it just seems redundant. Or, does Compaq Connections actually identify updates that would not be identified by the separate HP updates feature?

Any of you Compaq owners have a recommendation on this?

    Hi usavet

I have a Compaq R4000 and did remove that updater as one of the first cleanup runs I made on the laptop, it's not often that updates come out unlike antivirus or OS updates to warrant those updaters to hog the startups. I don't personally use msconfig as it defeats the objective of culling the starups as mscongig adds it's own startup back bit a good troubleshooting tool, usually delete unneeded startups or use StartupCPL

Halo, thanks for the reply. I have removed Compaq Connections.

By the way, did you leave any HP software installed? I still have HP Total Care Advisor installed, and there's a folder on my Programs menu, simply titled HP, that contains "HP Update" and "Wireless Home Network Setup". I thought perhaps the latter should be left installed; I guess it could be helpful in troubleshooting wireless connection problems.

I just opened HP Total Care Advisor. One item in the main screen is Battery; it says the battery is 100% charged and it's condition is good. But, I don't even have the battery in the computer now; I'm running directly off the AC adapter. Hmm ..., how can it report on the battery when the battery is not installed?

    Hi Usafvet

I actually got rid of all of it apart from my printer software which is a HP, but I agree with you on the Wireless troubleshooting and could be left. HP update I have never found helpful as the updates where like a blue moon, so just checked the support and driver page periodically for udpates, not worth a background task thats not updating daily like Antivirus.

Was updating that Compaq laptop earlier and remembered at later date I installed Vista over XP on it, so no HP/Compaq software was added apart from printer, using the Vista wireless connection manager, but originally with XP on it I removed after a short while the HP addons, didnt personally see a need for them, did try them out first to doublecheck.

Weird on battery but as they have memory it maybe remembering last charge and status.
