    I have a compaq, and there are three buttons (not ports) in the middle of the frame of the monitor. one opens a small blue window with DOS type (low res.) icons that would let me do all sorts of adjustments to the monitor screen, but I can't figure out how to access it (I was traded the computer, and no booklet came with it). there's about a dozen options, all set out like the numbers on a clock face. when I move my mouse "over" it, the arrow goes behind it and I can't click on anything there. back lighting is highlighted when I bring the little blue screen up, and I can push the other two buttons to either strengthen or weaken it, but I can't move from backlight to any of the other options. some allow me to move the desktop up, down, left or right, one allows me to center the desktop on the monitor screen, there's backlighting as I've mentioned, and a few other things I'm not exactly sure what are.
    how do I "click" on the icons in the blue screen for the monitor?
    I've tried numbers lock (duh, but it was worth a shot) and the arrow keys, haven't messed with the F key's 'cause I don't remember what most of them do...any way, the arrows and numbers lock didn't work.
    thanks,
    Cornelia

    The buttons will be for your monitor settings - brightness, contrast, screen adjustment etc. Adjusting the screen position was what happened when you moved the desktop around. Usually, by selecting the 'menu' button or equivalent, it will cycle through each feature and the positive and negative buttons change the value for this.

    hmmm...not sure if I was clear enough? or just not understanding what the reply means...
    there's just 3 buttons, the one that turns on the small blue screen/window, and the negative and possitive buttons which add/subtract to the strength of brightness, focus, etc.
    on the blue screen, which is only about 2 inches by 2 1/2, or at most 1 inch larger, there is a circle of icons. 2 at 12:00, a half filled circle and a circle with dots around it, like a sun with short rays. at 1:00 is a square with a smaller square overlapping the left side of it. at 2:00 is a box with a two way direction arrow inside it pointing left and right-a bar with a pointer on each end. at 3:00 is a square with a smaller square overlapping the top edge of it. at 4:00 is a box with a two way arrow pointing up and down. at 5:00 is a square with the sides caved in. at 6 are two icons, one being a zigarot (a flat topped triangle), the other a box with the left side convexed and the right side concaved. at 7:00 the box is tilted like a paralelogram but stockier. at 8:00 there is a box with two curved arrows in it (assume it means "rotate"). at 9:00 is an upside down u or very short handled tuning fork with a diagonal line through it. 9:00 also has a key with a K next to it. 10:00 has a diamond shape with an arrow coming out of it pointing left. 11:00 has an in Exit sign.
    that is the complete list of icons in the blue box, so you can see there's a lot of options available.
    the problem is, I can't access any of the icons except the one it's set to, the half filled circle. it's the screen light and dark, which puzzles me because I would think the sun symbol would be the brightness symbol.
    by the way, in the middle of the circle of the icons is this;
    User Mode
    H: 48.3K
    V: 60Hz
    hertz and volts? I don't know.
    oh, Jeez! I just got it to work by repeating what I'd done the first time and it didn't respond that time. I hate that. the two buttons to the right DO move to the other icons. computer gremlins! they didn't work when I first started fiddling with them.
    well, hopefully my debacle will help someone else in the future...sheesh...

    thanks, Puppywonder,
    it's amazing what is available on the web.
    I apologise for being so slow to answer, the holidays took control...
    I did go to the site, and found the issue discussed, though not as clearly as I'd like.
    this is what was said;

    Image is not centered.
    Horizontal position may need adjustment. Press the menu button to access the On-Screen Display. Select Horizontal Position to adjust as needed.
    Vertical position may need adjustment. Press the menu button to access the On-Screen Display. Select Vertical Position to adjust as needed.

    I assume that means the button on the monitor, as I discussed in my earlier post. it still doesn't tell me how to adjust it. I can move to the verticle position button, but am flumoxed as to what to do after that... window's button just brought up the start menue. tab sent me backwards through the stops I'd been before I started this post. oh! stumbled across it.

    for anyone banging your head against the screen with this puzzle, here is the answer.
    click on the left button on the front of the monitor. a blue screen comes up. use the minus button to go counter clockwise, the plus button to go clockwise.when you get to the icon you wish to use, it will be hi-lighted in red. click the left button again. the blue box will be replaced by a small rectangular box with a yellow bar, a number and a percentile. click on the minus button to reduce/move to the left, the plus button to enlarge/move to the right. click on the - or + button as many times as needed to get the effect you want. when done, just leave it alone, it disappears after a few minutes and the settings stay.
    I hope that's clear enough for anyone to figure out between what I've written and what the screen displays.
    now if I could just center MG's webpage within my www box...sheesh! lol...
