Compaq Presario 1200 Notebook Help

I have just acquired a Compaq Presario 1200 notebook, and it seems worth having it as a spare computer as it is running at 755mhz. But when i startup.. it gives me the Compaq screen then it goes to a black screen that says "While Initializing device VDK Windows Prot". I do not know who to get past this. I have gotten a windows XP cd so that i can install it on this machine, but the automatic setup does not occur, even when the CD is in the cd drive. I can hear it spinning up and reading..but the setup does not start.Also, would anybody know how to enter the bios on this machine the BIOS version is "Phoenix NoteBIOS v4.0"
