I'm having a similar problem myself, have the same exact type of computer, power went out about a month ago with a bad storm here and a close-by flash of lightning. HP wants to charge me $50 for the phone call since it's out of warranty, my ISP says I need to talk to them. I get "media disconnected" when I ping my IP, I have a light on the ethernet port but no connection. I tried to install a new PCI adapter to the motherboard, but after loading the drivers, it doesn't light up, just the old one... I did something wrong I think. Help? Thanks

    Hi

What Windows version do you have as well sa the service pack level?

In Device Manager are there any Yellow ! marks if so what are they next too?

What is the make and model of the new PCI Network adapter?

Initial thoughts are to as the original network would haev been onboard is to enter your BIOS and disable the onboard ethernet/lan/network, then try and install the new PCI card and driver.

When testing the internet, disable any 3rd party firewalls.
