Shouldn't laptops work on mains with the battery pulled?:confused

In theory, yes. I've used the power adapter only without the battery attached on Sony, Toshiba and Dell notebooks (mainly during diagnostics) with no issues.

If you have a multimeter double-check the voltage output of the DC plug jack. I have seen issues where the DC wires break internally near the output into the PC. Wiggling the wire will sometimes make it work for a brief time.

If this checks out, it could be a design flaw in this model. I've run into HP/Compaq models with strange issues (such as a BIOS that would not allow a downgrade from Vista to XP) in the past.

    Hope this helps. :)

Turns out that there's no power at the DC end. Apparently she had dirty power where she lived so perhaps something blew in the adapter itself. She also mentioned losing a couple of rigs too. The good news is that a replacement is dirt cheap $12, I just hope that's all it is. Thanks for the help.

BTW, what's the difference between a 'Fixed A-Tip' and a 'Fixed T tip'.? Noticed it on this site. They don't explain.

Looks like the A tip would be a snugger fit with an inside diameter of 1.7mm versus inside diameter of the t-tip of 1.8mm (according to the pictures).

Can you match up the original part number from the current adapter to the lists at the bottom of the page over there?

Nevermind, I can see from the screenshots that this needs an A tip. :major

    At $12 you're getting a deal.

I normally keep a decent quality universal notebook power adapter in my tech-box-to-go. The interchangeable tips/voltages work with about 98% of notebook (not netbook) PCs and - at about $40 - they're about half the price of an OEM ripoff from the PC mfr.
