Received an old X1000 compaq notebook the other day and when I tried to boot it up, the power light turns on, and the disk drive like just blinks. The blink is in sync with a clicking noise that is originating from the dvd drive. My brother (the notebook's former owner) claims that he has taken out every single piece of the computer (hard drive or ram) but the symptom stays the same. I'm going to do a re-test to see if this is true with my own eyes. Do you guys think this computer is wasted? or might i only have to replace 1 part. I know it could be a barrage of things, but any useful ideas are always much appreciated!:)

any news on how it came to be in that state? was it abandoned for some time and then this state resulted when tried to power on? Or perhaps it progressively got slower and then died?

You only need 3 things to turn a computer on, the CPU, RAM, and graphics. You can try disconnecting the CD/DVD drive and hard drive, and see if it will let you get into setup. if not, its likely a problem with one of those 3 key components. try swapping out RAM-- CPU and graphics are much harder, and depending on the motherboard, could be impossible to change.

i start it up the fans start running everything looks good (screen still black) for about 1 second then it just stops. The wireless and power led are on but absolutely nothing is happening

so the LCD doesnt ever respond, even for a second?

If so, it is very possible that the LCD has died ot the connection is bad. If the fans spin up and the power appears to be on, it could just be stalling since there are no boot devices and powering off.

I was wondering if there was any resolution to this problem. I am having the same problem with my Compaq presario x1000 where as soon as i turn it on, a repetitive clicking sound comes from my dvd drive and the computer won't start up. i can't open my dvd drive at all either. any clues? it's a bit of an emergency.
    thanks
