Hi, I am running XP Home with Service Pack3 installed. I am having problems with my HP Photosmart C5280 All-in-One printer/scanner/copier and wish to do a complete uninstall, so that I can do a re-installation. The reason for this action is that I have tried the usual Add/Remove program route, but when reinstalling, as soon as I connect it to the USB port it says that it has Found New Hardware- a 5200series printer(!) and this, of course, is wrong. I've spent quite a time on this and I am now stuck for ideas of where to go now, so I've come to you more knowledgeable guys.
    Step by step instructions, please!

Thanks in advance for any help offered.:cry

If XP has the drivers for the device built in then there is no way of removing them.

However, if it has retained the drivers after uninstalling the software suite they can be uninstalled easily.

First, right-click on "My Computer" and choose "manage". When the window opens click on "device manager" on the left of the window. Then plug the printer in and turn int on, and allow it to reinstall. It should appear in the device manager window. Right-click on it and choose "uninstall". When the window appears there should be a check box saying "remove driver". Check this and uninstall, then turn off the printer, unplug it, and reboot the computer. This should solve the problem.

    Re: HP Printer/Scanner problem

When you do the install, you need to make sure that the printer is not connected via USB or any connection to the computer, until it prompts you to do so. That means keeping it off, and not connected, until the install tells you to do so.

Merged both questions and answers into one thread, do try and stick to one thread on an issue as it saves duplicated answers and help. Cheers :)

I've done this, and made sure the printers USB was not connected, but on reinstalling the software it does NOT ask me to connect the printer at all. It completes the installation without asking me to do this. So when I eventually do connect the printer I get the Found New Hardware, then the Installing Photosmart 5200 series (which technically I suppose it is) but when I try to scan using the Print/Scan Wizard, it lists my printer as a C5200 and then tells me it cannot connect, etc., as I have a C5280 machine!:cry:cry
I'm now very frustrated as it was installed, and printing/scanning successfully, until I had to disconnect my system to allow me to redecorate the room. I then set up my system again and this incorrect recognition of my Photosmart C5280 happened.
So, thanks for the suggestions so far, but has anyone out there got a solution for me? Here's hoping! :tired
P.S. I can print under this C5200 installation but NOT scan.

Thanks Brownizs, but I've tried these links without any success at all. I've also tried using the full capabilities of the Revo uninstaller program without success.

Each time I re-install, the installation goes straight through, without asking me to connect the printer, and installs it as a HP C5200, which does allow me to print but if I try to scan the Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard tells me it is a HP C5200, when it is a C5280 model, and it cannot connect to it.

:cryPlease someone, what am I doing wrong!?! :cry

    Code:

Select XP and download the Utility/Diagnostic Tool.

You might also want to download the 3rd item under drivers which includes not only the driver but the full package of HP utilities for your printer.

:cry Thanks for the suggestion, Plodr, but I've already tried this several times, uninstalling, re-installing, all without success. Never does any attempt allow me to select my particular model, i.e. the C5280.
    Anything else anyone?

Try removing the drivers & program as above, reboot, plug the printer in & allow it to install, then install the driver CD. This should overwrite the windows chosen drivers.

You mean that Hp does not have such a device? I just found it and the drivers at
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...8&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3204464 As for a "Clean" install, one of the three utilities that I linked in the other post, will clean out the registry and it will be like you never installed the printer before.

Really need to follow this info, otherwise you are going to end up with this thread going nowhere, but like a three legged dog chasing its tail.

Thanks again, bownizs, but I am obviously not being very clear in my posts. I have followed your, and the other contributors, suggestions to the letter. I have followed and used this link that you have given, BUT when I do a 'new' install (without the usb printer connection) the installation runs through to its completion WITHOUT asking me to connect my printer, and has installed the driver for a C5200 model, NOT my C5280 model. again sorry if my post is not clear but I don't know how else to explain it and I am getting nowhere.

That is fine if it installs for the C5200, that is the series of the printer, not the exact model. As long as it is installing the drivers for that series, and you can print, but as for scanning, you have to use the HP Software, if it allows you to do so, not the Windows Fax & Scan.

It is a EOL (End of Life) product, so yes, it will be hard to do anything, but print with it.

I had the same problem with my DJ 4288 on my Xp Pro.Tried everything like rabhrab and left it as it is because I have another hard drive with 7. I had to format Xp for some other issue and then I could install the software and drivers from hp. As brownizs said my mistake was I connected the printer before installing the software. Sorry to say but I think there is no other solution.

Well, thanks to all for your help, but I fear my C5280 is going to the great printer graveyard in the sky! Tried everything, even a drastic XP re-install, then reloaded the (latest) software from HP (before connecting the printer!), without any joy. Oh well, onward and upward.......................! :wave

The problem is, the C5280 was manufactured with Win7 in mind, XP they supported, due to a lot of businesses still even to this day are using XP in the workplace. You may find that you will have no choice but to run Win7 or Win8, and if you have some obscure legacy software out there that will only run in XP, you can run XP in a VM, or a second partition for that program.
