It's an HP Pavilion running Windows XP Home edition. It has a 40GB hard drive and that is pretty much all I know about the system. A while back, I ran a complete system restore on it like I had done a few times before to set it back to the original settings or (Just like it had just come out of the box). Then it started giving me all sorts of problems... I networked it to my newer computer and tried to use it as storage but that didn't work too well so I set it up alone again and had nothing but problems. The other day, it got so bad that whenever I clicked on any icon, it would pop up with the wrong command. IE... when I clicked on My Computer, I would get a window asking me if I wanted to create a shortcut ect... Shortly after that, the computer just shut itself down and then tried to restart. It did this repeatedly until I pressed F10 during startup. The computer then tried to run system restore and then presented me with the blue screen that read as follows:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The Video driver failed to initialize
    ***stop: 0x000000B4 (0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00050000)

Then it told me to restart and try some things like disable bios memory otions such as caching or shadowing but I do not have enough experience to handle these operations without some guidance. Can anyone please help me? I do not have the OS disc so wiping the hard drive and re-loading the programs isn't an option for me without spending money I don't have.. Thanks.... Pat

    Have you tried this?

There is very little on stop error B4 and everything I find is for windows 2000, not XP

HP's usually have the model numbers on the front. Please look because there are hundreds of Pavilions (both desktop and laptop) and we have no clue as to what you have.

When you set it back to factory condition, were there any service packs on it?

It is a 514X and I had SP-1 installed before the restore.

I tried but for some reason it wasn't creating system restore points before it crashed. I had tried to restore it to an earlier time but there were none to choose from. I think it might be toast.

If you did not get a restore/recovery CD with your Pavilion 514x, you can order one from HP. I'm not sure if you used an official HP CD to restore or you used one you burned or you restored through windows.
If the hardware is okay, this will fix the computer to the state it was in when it left the factory. Then you need to update to SP3.

I will give that a try. There was no original CD, the software came already installed on the computer and the hard drive is partitioned into a C: and a Recovery D:
