My friend is doing a complete overhaul to his computer this weekend. He's changing the motherboard, CPU, video card, RAM, EVERYTHING. Anyways, he asked me to help him out with installing these things because I'm a bit more knowledgeable than him when it comes to computers. However, I've never installed a new CPU before. I'm sure I can easily figure out how to get the CPU in correctly, but I'm just wondering whether there are any BIOS settings I have to set for doing something like this? All I've toyed around with has just been upgrading RAM, video card, hard drives, etc. and changing the case of a computer, but never worked with a CPU specifically.

So, is there anything I should be wary of, or any special procedures? Or do I just stick the CPU in, boot up the computer, and just proceed to install the OS as if I only upgraded some RAM? Thanks!

    You shouldn't have any problems.

Most Bioses will automatically detect the CPU. With AMD, you may have to manually enter the FSB and multiplier, but as we don't know what he's buying, we can't say.

As far as physically installing the CPU, again we require more information regarding the hardware before suggesting something.

    Processor: S939 AMD Athlon64 4000+

I told him that usually the BIOS auto-detects but I just wanted to ask here to make sure before we're stuck up the creek without a working computer -.-

    Which part concerns you?

The physical installation, the Bios settings or both?

There are plenty of very experienced AMD (and Intel) users here who can guide you.

The BIOS settings is really all that concerns me. The physical installation shouldn't be a problem, I'll be able to figure that part out quite easily. It's just that I'm not sure whether or not the BIOS will auto-detect the CPU, or whether or not I'd need to input some settings before the CPU is usable. Thanks for the help so far.

    Can't say for certain.

Some Bioses do, some have to be manually set, especially for AMD.

Everest is a great program that will tell you all the vital info.

Most important thing is that you know the chip speed (not the AMD+, but real speed) and the FSB and multiplier so you can check they are correct.

    Nice CPU.

    It's FSB is 200 x a multiplier of 12 giving you 2 400.

    HERE are stats.
