component video vs. Svideo which one is better?

Got the new system and keep going back and forth about component video connectors. Supposedly svideo only scans horizontally while component video scans vertically and horizontally at the same time. I only have the cables to hook my xbox to the tv via component video at the moment. Wondering if I will really see the difference between the two to be honest.

Anyone have any experience with this and can shed some light on it?

....wife just called. Apparently the dvd/vcr combo thing works with dvd's but not with vhs tape :( Kids can't watch frosty the snowman and they are pissed lol.

S-Video is better for higher resolution tv's, the more horizontal lines the better the image. Most tv's come 480 lines, then tv's with a digital comb filter can support 720. HD and ED tv's usually have 1080 or more. So in this case it's gonna depend on the tv. If you have a regular CRT television, then component video will look just fine. The difference will be in DVD playback ;)

Thanks Iceman. I think I'm gonna just hook the xbox up via component for now. I really just wanted to get the xbox hooked to the new receiver with the optical cable for killer sound while gaming :)

Man, she just called again about the new vcr/dvd combo deck. Anyone have any tips with these things? Im at work and will have to look at it when I get home. Seemed pretty straight forward, put in a tape/switch to vcr/ push play. Am I missing something? confused:

Sounds like you got it about right... just be careful with lil kids thinking that the tape slot or the dvd tray is designed for food storage. Wenchie knows all about that one ;) :D

Is everyone on the same page? In order of quality, lowest to highest, there's composite video (single RCA connector, usually color-coded yellow), S-video (mini-DIN), and then component video (three RCA connectors, color-coded red/blue/green).

My bad, I was confusing composite with component. Thanks for clearing that up :D

Be sure to spend a little extra for the good cables. I'm one cheap mutha, but I never skimp when it comes to cables!

Went back last night. Got more optic cables and returned the Toshiba dvd/vcr for a Sony. Plugged the Sony in and it just works. I must say with everything plugged in digital so far the sound is AMAZING. I cannot believe how much stuff I was missing before, it's a night and day difference soundwise.

Passed on the component video cabes once again, didn't feel like dropping another 120 just to see if the dvd playback would be better. Gonna test it with the xbox straight into the tv and see if its better.

Now I just gotta find the time to hook the xbox up lol. :)

the quality of the wire makes a huge difference also...i had all cheapo wires hooked up to my tv and it looked great...but then i went out and bought monster cable to hook up my dvd player and my xbox to my 57 inch sony HD tv and i was amazed the clairty and color was many times better....never buy cheap cables...never

Don't get sucked into the marketing hype on component video cables. Circuit City has 12 footers for $20-25. 6-footers for less.

Hooked up the xbox via the Psyclone component cable and optical for audio. Holy smokes! Better picture and the sound is amazing!!
