Any thoughts on disc compression to free up space??

    From the WindowsClub dotCom.......

Do Not Compress the System Drive
A Golden Rule! Never compress the C drive or System Drive. System drive compression could cause a lot of problems including causing driver installations to fail. And even if you still do decide to compress the system drive – DO NOT compress the root directory, and DO NOT compress the Windows directory. Doing so could even render your Windows computer un-bootable!

Large drives and externals are really cheap today. Offload some data files or less-used programs.

Hummm....I have remove all unused programs....most "data" files are small.....o_O

What size is the drive? What is using up the space?

Text and text type files compress most.
Already compressed, zip, multimedia, .msi installer files and such compress less.

Why not just get a larger drive (or an additional drive if desktop). I know it's a bit of a hassle to swap out.

If you start compressing data files you will inevitably run up against this issue again plus you are going to have spend quite a lot of time compressing the data files

Next question. If I have saved files and folders to One Drive....have I duplicated those items??

I don't think I can upgrade this laptop to a bigger drive. I do have a spare backup drive....but that would be a hassle to access it daily.

I just compressed the 'My Documents' folder on a Win 10 here. It originally was 225mb and compressed to 99mb. Mostly games moved from other pc that were portable, but included all the exe. music, wav and gif in the games. Some flash games.

But to save space I would have to go into the real 'folder' and delete everything. No problem here if I did that as the user is going to be gone for a while. But it was a fair amount of space saved and available.

To restore to the same folder took less than a minute.

Doing the same on the user's "Desktop' folder went from 35 to 25. But not much on there to begin with.

Reading on-line I see a bunch of ways '10 has to save space. This may be worth a read.
It's long and involved but show a lot of options for '10. Go past the Vista, '7 , 8 stuff to get to '10. Each new roll-out of '10 seems to add more to the mix.

Imandy....the link is old and some of the options no longer exist. I guess I am wondering if, since the files are saved to folders in the OneDrive......can I delete the individual files in the folders on my hard drive?

If you are using the OneDrive app then deleting the files/folders on your HDD will also delete them from OneDrive. However if you just drag files to OneDrive in a browser then you can go ahead and delete them from the HDD. HERE is a useful guide.

I talked to an MS person who said that since they are sync'd to the cloud, the files in the folders can be deleted.

    Hummm.....he seems confused....BRB.

He sure is - I just retested what I said. As long as the files on the OneDrive website were just uploaded to it in the browser there is no syncing.

"...you delete a file from the "Downloads" folder on your PC, which has already been synchronized in Onedrive, this file will be deleted from your PC, but not from Onedrive. I explain?" I suspect he isn't American....I explain?

I went to OneDrive online....logged in and my files and folders are all there.

It's useful but the 5gb limit ??? Have you tried Google Drive?

Yeah I know..and what he left out was the files will be only still existing ONLINE!! So to access anything saved to OneDrive, I would have to log into it online everyday. Well, may not be very valuable to free up disc space, but I guess it is good for backup storage..sigh.

    1. Select the Start button, and then select Settings > System > Storage .
    2. Select Temporary files in the storage breakdown. ...
    3. Windows will take a few moments to determine what files and apps are taking up the most space on your PC.
Mine turned out to be backup......!! Freed up over 300 GB.

Make an image - off the computer. Don't backup to your one hard drive. When it dies, you lose everything!

I have everything I need saved ( backed up ) to both OneDrive and GoogleDrive. Then all backed up to a thumb drive....LOL. I also have the ISO to reinstall on a thumb drive. I think I am pretty well covered.
