Computer adds random "1" or "!" when typing

Lately my computer has been throwing random 1's or !'s when I type. FYI - I have a laptop and am using a full sized wireless keyboard plugged into a USB port. My husband and I went out of town about 3 weeks back, taking the offending laptop with us, and returned last week, which is when I noticed this starting. I have reinstalled the keyboard driver, toggled the FN/Scroll lock key, rebooted, and still am having the problem. It's not major, just very annoying. And when I hold down the backspace key, it just adds multiple 1's until I let it up. Any ideas/suggestions? Could my keyboard be on it's last leg?? It is at least 5 years old............

Do you mean you have 2 keyboards? An external one via USB and the original fixed one?

If so...
Does the problem happen with both keyboards? ie Disconnect the USB keyboard reboot etc and see if the problem persists using only your fixed keyboard. This way to can eliminate or determine if your external keyboard is the cause.

Can you borrow another USB keyboard to try?

 

Yep, definitely sounds like something is stuck under the 1/! key of the laptop

 

Yes, I use a full-size KB (and moniter) when in the office - I find it easier that trying to type on the little laptop keyboard. It was not happening when we were out of town and I was using the laptop KB.

 

Canned air is definitely my friend today!! Cleaned the wireless KB and all is well again. Thanks!!!
