Computer beeping when starting up

G'day all

I brought a friend's computer home to install XP on and when I start it up it beeps all through the startup process and the keyboard wont work... (it was working OK at her house)

I have tried 2 other keyboards that work on other computers but the same thing happens.... It's a constant beep every 2 secs or so...

The keyboard is DEFINATELY in the correct slot........ I just don't get it...

ANY advice would be fantastic...

Probably something inside the case has jolted lose. Open the case up & reseat everything again. Especially memory & vid card.

This is what I think it is
repeating short Power Supply or System Board failure
continuous Power Supply or System Board / Keyboard stuck

well it's a continuous repeating short...

So what could have happened from the time I picked it up and brought it home???

I was very careful with it although it was standing on it's end and it's not a tower.....

I have opened the case and all seems OK... but the beeping IS coming from ...er.... the big cream plastic box inside at the front of the comp... near the HD and floppys

I am SUCH a techno whiz...

What BIOS goes the board have?

I think Everest will tell you if you don't know.

Sure there is not a pause between all those beeps?

 

It's an Award BIOS
It starts beeping pretty much after pressing the ON button...
It beeps through the mem test
stops for a few secs after that
then starts again when detecting drives etc
then stops when starting Win 2000
Then starts again when going to the Win 2000 logon screen (at this screen the beeps are deeper sounding).. if that makes sense.... but the same speed

I can't press the DEL key at the beginning cause the keyboard doesn't work...

check to see if the heat sink on the cpu came off, or is not in contact with the cpu, tbl might be hi temp alarm

 

if you have a video card that requires a power supply connection make sure it is plugged in

There's nothing loose in the box that I can see

Just out of interest, when I unplug the keyboard it doesn't beep at all....

I have tried 2 other working keyboards and they both beep ...

I dunno..

The area where the keyboard plugs in looks OK...

With the keyboard unplugged does it boot all the way into windows? What happens if you then plug the keyboard in?

Maybe the board is cactus??????

If it has usb ports maybe you could try that for keyboard connection.......that's if you have one lying around.

It boots all the way to Window with the keyboard in or out... but without it there's no beeps..

And no it doesn't have a USB port

So when you get to windows the beeping stops?

Your friend might have to get ear plugs for the boot process.
