I just updates my computer to the latest microsoft updates. Big mistake. Not only it ran slow but now th emouse doesn't work and I get this message "your system is low in virtual memory. WIndows is increasing the size..." The thing is: I tried using the compaq Operating System CD but basically I'm afraid it'll erase my stuff since "repair" didn't do the trick. I can see my files but I can't do anything. HELP!

Check to make sure the mouse is plugged in. It might have wiggled loose.:) If it is OK, check back here, someone with more knowledge will have an answer.

It's plugged in alright! Thanks, I even tried a different mouse and nothing. If I turn the computer off and restart it I get the COMPAQ logo and then goes to the Windows XP logo and it looks like it's working and then after lots of loading noises I get the XP page with all the users, so since the mouse doesn't do a thing I just use the arrow keys and ENTER on my user box. After that, it shows my desktop and the background(looks perfect upt o now). My desktop icons look normal too but again no mouse and when I scroll to the START page I see NO programs there. It's like they didn't load from the start. It's almost like the system is using the minimum amount of memory everywhere. Finally after 5 minutes it shows me that "virtual memory message" again and it's over. Just sits there. I really need this thing to work. IF it doesn't work EVER, can you at least tell me how I could retrieve my family pictures and docs since I can see the icons but can't click on them. Thanks everyone, I'm so helpless at the moment, it's horrible.

Have you tried F8 on a re-start and then choose last good configuration or a system restore? I don't really know enough to give you more help then that. Just be patient and someone will get you going.

I dont know if this will help forsure, but I have had similar problems with pad controllers. try going to Start > controll panel> mouse and Hrdware . Possibly you have more than one mouse listed? select the current mouse..Does this help you?

Also it is important to check out your Start > controll panel > System > Hardware > device manager > Mouse , and see if there is a Yellow /!\
if the above and below dont work, Or if you use no other USB, Does your usb in device manager show a /!\ in yellow?
    please post back

It's a virus. I'm almost 100% sure that's what did it. I've tried everything and nothing so I'm re-installing windows XP. I have a backup from 6 months ago, i know I should have kept up with the back ups. Oh well, I learned another lesson. At least I have something to start from. It'll be 6 months old but it's better than nothing. THANKS! :) You guys are great people for helping folks like me. Thank you!
