I have an older computer, 900mhz 128mb sd ram running windows 2000 and i'm trying to get it hooked up again so another family member can use it. but i've tried all 3 mice that i have and i cannot seem to get a pointer. i know whenever i upgraded mice in the past, that my current ones were working just fine. it's been a while since i've fired up one of these mice though. but to put an end to any dispute.. I tried my Logitech mx500 mouse, which I use on this computer, and it doesn't even want to be detected on the older computer. I have a MS optical mouse and whenever i insert this mouse in the old computer, I am prompted with a "Found new Hardware / Optical Mouse" dialog. But I can't do anything from there. I tried to get around with the keyboard only, but i'm not too keyboard savvy and a few times, the computer would say "explorer.exe has to shut down." If i can get a mouse pointer on my screen, I'd just be fine, I could maintenance the computer etc, I know it needs a lot of software updates, etc, since it hasn't been used in over a year.

Win2ooo doesn't have the drivers that xp has ...a standard mouse will work, but optical / usb ..etc, will need drivers to use.

    hey tim, what's up?
ok.. listen to this, i have 3 mice, one is a normal ball mouse, which came with that 900mhz pc and it is PS/2, another is MS optical, and i have the logitech mx500. The normal mouse isn't working either. I don't know why!

ps/2 doesn't work? Now that is weird ....you rebooting each time you change the mouse? ....as in changing mice when the puter is off?

Not much ...slow night ...doing a sudoku puzzle ....did you check the bios to be sure the ps/2 was active? the only other thing I can think of is:
    1. Boot the setup disks
    2. After the last disk choose (r) for repair
    3. Go into the recovery console
    4. Get to the C:\WINNT prompt (somewhere around here)
    5. Type LISTSVC
    6. It will scrool all your devices and tell you if they
    are enable or disabled.
******BE CAREFUL HERE, DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE****
(unless you know what your doing)
    7. Look for the ps/2 mouse driver (ex: i4082....)
    8. Then type ENABLE SERVICE_BOOT_(service name)
    9. Then type exit to restart

If that doesnt work try holding in the SHIFT key at
    startup.
