Hey everyone. My friend has a computer where the power button got busted. It's pressed down into the front panel. We popped it out so that big circle button(the one you normally press to power on your computer) isn't in the front panel.

What I did after that was open up the case and pop out the front panel. I noticed to the back of the front panel is that the two wires that connect from the motherboard to a smaller power button(square shaped) got unstuck from the square shaped slot. It was held together by two small barriers that stuck out from the top and the bottom of the square hole. It was covered in a jelly like substance that looked very hard(a guy told me it was silicone) but that part got dislodged from the back of the front panel which is why this is happening. The mechanism for the reset button is the same but its fully intact. If I want to power on the computer I would have to press that tiny square button with the two wires sticking out that connects to the respective pins on the motherboard.

Another thing, if I push that square button back into its slot, use a screwdriver to hold it in place temporarily and connect the circle button to the square button on the front side of the panel I would get the click that powers the computer up.

What I really want to know is what's the best material I can use to hold that square button to the back of the front panel in place so it doesn't come out through the back of the front panel when I press that circle button on the other side. I just want to know what's the safest & strongest. I got some putty(the clay like stuff they use to hold glass) I can try to cap the square hole in the back but I want to make sure it holds in the long term. I have chewing gum too I could chew up and stick to it but will it hold? I'm also thinking super glue or silicone even though I don't have those at my disposal right now. Don't forget that the barrier bars from the square slot are broken. The plan is to put the square button in the slot and cap it with some strong material that sticks so when I press the Circle button the on front side the computer powers on so please help me with this.

Don't use super glue. I'm talking from experience, it will seep into the button mechanism and the button will be stuck. I had to buy a new button mechanism because the original one was wasted. My recommendation would be the putty, or even just leaving the side panel off and just using the clicker.

    Hi,

Hot Glue might be a better choice.

Since the OP posted in 2008, I suspect he has come up with some sort of solution in almost 5 years. ;)
