Ive been having some computer problems lately and was hoping some of you guys could help. The main problem im having is the computer is constantly freezing, first it started off while playing games like counter strike and AOE, but than it slowly started freezing when i was watching a youtube video and such. Now it just seems like its freezing whenever, for no particular reason. Ill have to manually restart my computer and during the restart the computer will freeze or ill get a black screen after or before the Windows XP loading screen, and it will take me atleast 10 minutes to get the computer back and running. It freezes about 2-3 times a day sometimes more. I Feel like it'll freeze more often when i have Itunes open along with a video, or if i just have a lot of programs running. My computer is 2.4 Ghz, 512 Ram, with a 6600Gt as my video card. If you need to know more just ask ill and try to respond soon as possible, thanks for the help.

currently i have, AVG, Adware S/E and Spybot along with CCleaner and Window Washer. Nothing really comes up on any of them when i run a scan. I used to have Norton but it really just slowed my computer down so i uninstalled it. Ill see, if i dont get to much responses ill post in the Malware section, but ill keep this up for now.

Hello turk, welcome to Major Geeks.

You don't say anything about the hard drive, but I would hazard a guess that you are bumping against the performance limits of your pc. It should be a giveaway that the poblems are induced by running several resource intensive activities at the same time.
Make sure your hard drive is less than 50% full, do the disk cleanup and defrag. If you must store lots of itunes stuff do it on a separate drive.
Some extra memory would help alot too.

You don't need to post in Malware to go through the stage 1 process just follow the Chas instructions.

Try system restore to the last point when your system worked properly

alright thanks for some of the help, but still any reason why the computer freezes up on restart and i get a black screen after the windows xp loading screen? After my computer freezes it usually takes me 10-20 minutes to get it back and running, and even sometimes it will freeze right after the login screen.

It sounds like a corrupt file or a file conflict to me but I am not the most experienced. Had you installed or updated your system prior to this taking place? Try a registry cleaner

In your first post you state that you have difficulty restarting AFTER the error occurs. Now you are concentrating on the restart process.

    WHY?

There are many possible reasons, both hardware and software, for the behaviour of your pc and various Geeks have offered possibilities. But without further information and feedback we are all powerless to help.

you must do the legwork, (or fingerwork in your case) to eliminate posssibilities.

    Hardware things to do are:
    Disconnect the power lead
Attend to the pcs internal cleanliness
Check the motherboard battery (it should be greater than 3V)
Take out any memory modules, processor and pci modules, clean the contacts by rubbing with newspaper and reseat firmly.
Reseat firmly all connectors and make sure internal airflow is unobstructed by leads.
Look at the state of the capacitors on the board, are any bulging or leaking?

    Software things to do are

Test if the problem also occurs when running with a light load. Does it ever occur in safe Mode?
    Do the software housekeeping,
    Disk cleanup
    Defrag
    Clear internet cache
How full is your hard drive?

Post the results and if none of this works the next step is a conflict search using MSCONFIG - which can be quick or a long drawn out process.

Finally look at the event logs for the time of any incident and post an yerrors reported there.
