my sister was messing around in the bios of my computer when i was at work and see sayed that see changed the cpu speed and thing in that area. well i turned on me computer and the thinking light stays on and the cd-rom lights blink. so i cleared the bios and after that i was puting the cover back on a spark from me hand hit the case and it does even turn on any more. so i was wondering if it my computer not starting is from my sister, me clearing the bios, or the spark from my hand. the power cord is pluged in. and if there is anything i can do. i cheacked all the conections to.

To the best of my knowledge, the case itself is grounded, so that shouldn't have had an effect. I might be wrong on that score though. In any case, try removing the RAM, and testing to see if you can get it to post. It should beep a couple of times indicating the memory is bad. If it doesn't you'll probably need a new mother board/CPU combo. If it does, it might be your power supply.

i tryed the power source in another computer and it worked. but the compter doesnt even resond when i hit the power buttion it just does nothing and i've tryed puting another switch in to see if that was it but still nothing. so would that be from the motherbord or somehing else.

this may sound like a stupid question, but is the power supply connected to the motherboard in the correct spot to control the front power/reset buttons?

Are you translating from Klingon or Ferengi? What type of computer are you talking about? If it is a laptop, try removing and replacing the battery. If that doesn't work, there is usually a small button on the bottom that you can poke with a small screwdriver to reset the thing. But if the dilithium chamber is breeched, you need to jettison the core!

Did you say a spark came out when you were messing around in the case? Oh brother...I don't wanna jump the guns but ESD could easily fry your mobo/CPU/RAM in a split second and there may not be even be any sparks!
IF you had sparks that is definitely not a good sign. But if you you try to boot with bare minimum components needed (Power Supply/case, RAM, CPU, and Video card/Monitor are you able to boot? This configuration is enough since all you trying to do is to see if the PC boots. IF PS is good but even that way it still doesn't boot then I would suspect your mobo or CPU is damaged...

Additional note: there is still electricity coming to mobo when the power cord is plugged in and the on/off switch in the back of the PS (if there is one) is not on 0 (zero) position.

More tips for you: Even if the Video card or RAM was damaged the system would still power on, you would hear beeps. The only other 2 component that would stop the system from powering (besides the PS) are: Mobo and CPU.

My suggestion: UNPLUG the power cord. Open case and if you do not have an anti-static wrist wrap, touch the power supply for a second or two then remove everything including RAM and CPU, leave mobo completely free of all cables and cards. REmove the BIOS battery (test it on another system if you can to make sure it is still good). Examine the side of the CPU that faces mobo (the core chip) to see if it looks burned or chipped. If it looks clean and fine, examine the mobo for black/gray burn spots.
After that install the battery, RAM, CPU and Video card back in. Plug the power supply and the cord that goes from the front power button to the mobo.
Cross your fingers and fire it up...
    Good Luck.

ill try that and the spark hit the top of the case on the outside.

i unpluged everthing and tryed to turn it on and it did so i pluged everything back in and then it just sat there with no video like it did the first time when my sister was mesing around in the bios. so i again tryed to clear the bios and now it wont turn on again.

Marioman you might have to get Luigi's help on this :)
on the serious note, what items did you have on the mobo when it turned on succesfully and what components did you install additionally before it wouldn't turn on any more?

I am not sure if you already answered these questions but just to make sure:
~ Does the fan in the back side of the Power Supply Unit work (spin)?
~ Do you see any of the lights come on?
~ Do you hear any beeps or humming sound from any of the parts when it looks like there is no video signal?
~ How do you clear the BIOS? From the BIOS settings screen or using a jumper on the mobo? If you have messed around with any of the motherboard jumpers, I would suggest you grab the mobo manual and check each and every jumper to make sure they are configured correctly.

Clarify the question by answering each one of them so I can understand better.

i removed everthing but the cpu and video card. i turned it on and it beeped and the fans started. so i pluged everthing back in and truned it on again and it started but no video and it was like it was when my sister was on it. i tryed to clear the bios by what it says in the instruction manual and then tryed to turn it on again and it went back to not turning on. the computer didnt resond at all when i hit the power button. i asked what she did in there and she turned up the async agp/pci clk from (66/33 MHz) to (80/40 MHz) and the cpu clock spped as high as it will go, why see did that i have no idea. there where bios jumpers on the motherboard

Ok, not as detailed as I'd like to see but I am assuming you hit DEL or F2 and got in the BIOS configuration and reset it by choosing 'Load BIOS defaults' or something similar, right? If not let me know.

You just had the Video and the CPU? add RAM as well to that configuration and take out every other card out, detach all the drives such as Floppy, HardDisk, CD-ROM, etc...

So to rehash, all you will have connected:
PowerSupply, Mobo/battery, CPU, CPU heatsink/fan, RAM, Video Card and the case. nothing else...
Fired it up, what happens? Tell me everything (I can handle it). ;)

Thank for your kind words IronMan...I try.
Mario, you are using the BIOS reset jumper, you do knwo that reset jumper is in the reset position when the system is turned off and power cord is unplugged, right? And it only takes a few secs for BIOS to get reset when the jumper is in the reset position, then you move it back to its 'normal' position, you never ever boot your system when the BIOS reset jumper is in the 'reset' position. Anyhow, I just wanted to touch on that bit as well.
If you indeed moved it back to the normal position and turn the PC on, what happens?
~ Does the PowerSupply turn on? (the fan in the back spinning, humming sound, etc) Even if the PSU was not connected to the Motherboard, it would still turn on if the unit itself, the power cord and the wall outlet was good, period! answer YES to this then I will continue...if NO then either:
~ Wall outlet is bad (try another)
~ power cord is bad, try another
~ Power Supply unit went to PSU heaven, get another!

lol leaving it in reset position never crossed my mind

Yikes, I just posted a reply then I saw Mario's and Iron's additional posts...

Still, the power LED lights in front of the case may not come on:

    NO juice coming to PSU
NO juice to MOBO (where the power button gets its own juice)
Cables from the front of the case are not connected or connected correctly
BIOS reset jumper left in the temporary 'reset' position hence my questions and comments in the previous post.

yes everthing is good. and i know that u dont turn on the computer when the jumpers are in the reset postion. but so fare (the two times i did it) the computer would not turn back on.

if im not mistaken i believe u said that you tried another power supply.
if the reset jumper doesnt work with your old power supply try the other one.

i think you said your didnt mess with any of the LED wires so my last thought would be the motherboard.
    lets see what turcoloco thinks

Going around in loops, Mario, answer me this:
DO the POWERSUPPLY TURN ON (fan in the back spinning, PSU unit making a humming sound when you flick the Power Switch?

  26. marioman68

the fan on the power source will not turn on because there is no switch on it it turn on from the switch that conects to the motherboard. and when i do hit the button notin at all happens

ok you might have said this already but,
Did your computer run any after she changed the clockspeed
or did it shut down right then o later on
or you turned it off and it didnt turn on again

  29. marioman68

    marioman68 Private E-2

when she did it she turned off the computer and and she told me when i turned it on the lights blinked like it usualy did and then the hard drive active light just stayed on and there was no video. thats when i tryed to reset the bios.

i wouldnt think it would be the cpu (i could be wrong) and since the power supply does work the only other thing i can think of would be the motherboard.

lets hope its not the motherboard.

Sorry I was busy (at work between 7am-4pm PST).
The cables from the front of the case including the power button simply makes the 2 pins 'touch' each other completing the circuit so the mobo activates, since the PowerSupply is plugged onto the motherboard there is always currency on the motherboard even though the switch is off. Confirm that the power button's cable is connected to the correct pins on the mobo, if you can confirm that by looking at the mobo then take the cable out and using a small flathead screwdriver touch those 2 pins to short it out and see if the system kicks in, if that unorthodox method didn't yield successful results then either your mobo or (quite possibly) your CPU is gone...

    But try this first:
unplug the PowerSupply's power cord from the back of it.
Open the case, touch the powersupply then remove the BIOS battery for 30-40 secs then put it back in, close the case plug in the power cord and fire the system up to see if you get anything on the screen.

nothing happend. so changing the cpu clock speed can completly make a computer not working ever again. so now i need a new mother board and see if that will work. is there any good one that dont cost a forchen that uses intel 478 pin
    533-MHz system bus
    512-KB l2 advance transfer cache
    Hyper Pipelined Technology
    Steaming SIMD extension 2
    rapid execution engine
128 bit enhanced floatin point unit
    execution trace cache
    advance dynamic execution

    and DDR ram

i'd liketo get the MB from newegg.com if i could.

I had the feeling it was the CPU/RAM clock speed that caused the problem.
If it would have been a temporary problem, resetting the BIOS would have put things the way they were since you are saying you have done all we suggested and still no life, then you have permanently damaged your CPU (yes unless you damaged the mobo through ESD by touching it, I'd think it is your CPU that got fried!).

Remember I asked you to remove everything including CPU and the mobo battery and video card, but you didn't do it. By doing this you also can check the back of the CPU where the core section is to see if it has any colorings or chipped off pieces....
Gotta give me the info I need and follow the steps so we are not going in loops
