I have a really old computer with a E5300 processor. I bought a E5800 which is supposed to be 25% faster for $6. Swapped them, works fine.
    BUT
The computer still thinks I have a E5300.
How do I convince it that I have a E5800?

    Windows 10
    HP

Maybe the MB doesn't support anything faster than an E5300 .....but that's only speculation as you didn't tell us what the computer model is or the MB.

I was wrong; not a E5800, but a E8500. Sorry. But either way, it still shows up as a E5300.
    It is a HP S5500
I ran a program that gives more details on the system
    CPU
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz 52 °C
    Wolfdale 45nm Technology
    RAM
    4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (6-6-6-18)
    Motherboard
    MSI Boston (Socket 775) 65 °C

Apparently this program sees a E8500.

  4. What does your "Device Manager" say? Right-Click the "Start" menu navigate to "Device Manager" and then go down to "Processor" and expanded it, then tell us what it says.If you can tell the computer is running faster and smoother I honestly wouldn't worry about it see as it is preforming as it should. Also did you need to do driver updates for it?

Device manager shows it as a E5300.

It says I have the best driver, but of course it doesn't know what the processor is.

  6. When you installed it for the first time did it try to install a driver of sorts and if not then go to the manufacturers website and see if they have a driver for this processor.

I did not install any software. As far as I can tell, the E5300 and the E8500 use the same driver, and my driver is the most current.

  8. Can you notice a difference in performance?

I've attached a copy of the CPU-Z. It shows the E8500. The core speed is generally 1995, but occasionally changes to 3159; is that expected?

So, assuming the computer sees a E8500, why does Windows claim it is still the E5300? Capture.JPG

What is showing you it's an E5300? If Device Manager is showing it right it should be ok. BTW, never rely on Device manager for up to date drivers. It'll always tell you you have the most recent driver. You have to go to the manufacturer's website to be sure.

Just a reminder - CPUs usually lower their clock speed when not under heavy load to save power.

I checked the Intel website, but didn't find any drivers for the E8500.
I went to HP and downloaded their support assistant. It said no upgrades were available my computer. It said I had a E5300.
I also downloaded the HP diagnostic software. It says I have a E8500.

You said it was a really old computer. Maybe the upgraded CPU is also past support. I'm sure after time old rigs get dropped off the database.

  14. Here is Intel's Diagnostic Tool specifically for this processor and a few other programs that might be worth exploring.

That did it!!! Shows everywhere as a E8500. And it only cost $6.
I don't know which is more astonishing, the internet or China.
