this is a very confusing issue here as i said in the last forum about installing linux on these kinds of system is what i aiming to do here

the machine they have over at the school (only in a specific room) all are running windows 98 (except the ones that don't startup) but this is what happens whenever you push the poer button on the front it will just blink orange instead of saying lit up green constantly, is doesn't display anything on the screen, don't have any clue as to why this is happening

    all help is greatly appreciated

    Hi

I take it this is a continuation of your Linux install question? if its not and its about Windows then I will move it back to software, if its about a none booting Linux install then it belongs in this Linux forum.

Reading into the flashing orange power light then this is likely a hardware issue and last time one of the Dells in my office had that exact issue it was a dead PSU (Dell engineers came to my office to fix *gold support customer*), so if these PC with bootup issue have not been used for a long time then try a new Bios battery, if not likely dead PSU, could test with a known working PSU from another Dell.

If the PCs worked a day or so ago then try this pull out the power cord until the orange light stops flashing then pop the cord back in and reboot, may need to try this a few times, bit its only a workaround to get it to boot possibly to get data off it.

    Re: computer doesn't startup

this forum more likely belongs in the hardware forum it is having to deal with a boot up issue (this case getting the darn thing to turn on but instead i am getting the orange light on the power button and blinks so you can move it)

this forum doesn't have anything to do with linux it is a hardware issue

just tried your suggested method the second i unplugged the power able from the power supply the orange light imediately stopped blinking do i have to keep it unplugged for a certain amount of time or whenever i feel like trying to turn it back on

    HI

    Moved to hardware

I kept it pulled out for 10mins then plugged back in, weirdly booted the PC but in the end it failed completly hence the Dell engineer replacing the PSU, so I would try replacing the mobo battery, and then change the PSU for known good one to rule in or out the PSU as the cause.

i doubt the school district would pitch in any money to do that sorta thing and the tech experts that fix the computers aren't the smartest they usually fix the problems by completely restructoring windows (delete the partition and os then format it and install it again loosing everything that was on there so they have to go back and re-install all the software they put on it to begin with)
