    Hi.

First of all here are my computer specs, its a custom made pc, The case has no name or brand on it, so cant be sure if it even has a brand.
    Windows vista home premium
The graphics card is not very good, it is a standard vga graphics adapter, my vista gives it a score of 1.... I cannot eve use aero graphics.
    Intel (R) pentium (R) d cpu 3.40 ghz 3.40 ghz
    Memory ram: 1470 MB
    32 bit operating system

My pc fan is extremley loud, and is always loud. Its hard to hear volume from the speakers, the fan is that loud, you wouldn't believe it.

I've taken the fan out completley, cleaned it, air compressed it, vacumed it, got rid of all dust, put it back in and still loud as all hell.
I'v unplugged it and left it unplugged, but the pc randomly reboots when this happens, I even put a small desk fan next to the pc, it still reboots.

I cannot tolerate the fans loudness much longer, I am going deaf.
Do I have to buy a new fan or is their another way around this?

Any tips? Any programs I can use to tell my pc's temperature? Would using a desk fan help?

    Thankyou all.

    If you download this

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181

It will give you the temps for all the sensors in your PC.

For the fan it could be the bearings are worn, the best thing is see if you can borrow a fan and see if it's still loud otherwise get a new one, they are not expensive.

    Hey.

I spin the fan around when the pc is off and theirs no loud sound, and it spints freely.
The temperatures are as follows -
    System 36 C
    Cpu 59 c
    Aux 47 c
    hd0 38 c

    Are they good or bad?

The CPU could be a bit cooler but nothing to get in a panic over.

I still suspect the fan is not moving enough air ?

As i type my GPU is at 104 now that's warm but i am running heavy graphics so it will warm up.

If I were to put a desk fan next to the pc and take the case off, would that fix the problem?

It may help but when you open the case It disturbs the air flow from your front case fan and the rear case fan, but it's worth a try.

What may be happening is that the bearings in the CPU fan are on the way out and although it spins freely it may not be getting up to full speed.

    Thankyou very much.

    The fans rpm is 4821.

Take the side cover off the pc case only. If the temps ie cpu, hdd and system fall then this is indicative of poor overall cooling ie you are not moving enough air through the case.

As regards the cpu fan being loud you will need to purchase a better quality fan that moves more air but creates less db.

    http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/de80ef1.html

Maybe the one in the link above [if you have an 80mm fan]. It is 33db and moves 37.01 CFM.

I would also add the following rider. A great cpu fan in a case with poor airflow will struggle. Equally a medium spec cpu fan in a case with great cooling will excel.

Your current cpu and hdd temps are a bit high for my liking [though I am not too familiar with intel cpus]

Other alternatives would be 1. download Speedfan which has software funtionality to slow the cpu fan down. 2. Purchase a standalone fan controller which will be able to slow down your current cpu fan. 3. get a cpu fan with a speed adjustment function built on ie a knob on the fan to speed/slow it.

    Good Luck

    Hey all.

I've been told I can change the fans speeds if I know the motherboard.
    Here is the motherboard specs.
    Gigabyte Ga-8vm800pmd-775

How do I change the speeds?

Also, If I buy a new fan, do I take just the fan or do I take the silver thing the fan sits on aswell.

Sometimes it's in your bios but many motherboards support speed fan for adjusting fan speeds.

Okay let's try and be a bit more "specific". Are you talking about your CPU HS Fan:

    Stock HS

Your CPU is hitting 59C is that with "normal activity" (surfing the web etc) or are you purposely loading the CPU and with what program?

Personally I think your Fan is loud because it is doing "what it is supposed to be doing" and that is keeping the CPU cool. I hit 59C when I am purposely stress testing my CPU and making it hit 100% load but at the moment for normal activity it is hitting 38C.

I suspect that you need to remove the whole heatsink (HS) and refresh the Thermal Interface Material (TIM) and get your temps under control, then your fan will become "quite" again. This is "basic housekeeping" that imho needs to be done 1-2 a year. If this seems to be the case I can post some links on how to.

Is it a stock HS as linked above?

Intel used to use crappy thermal pads which "dry" out and become less effective over time causing CPU temps to rise, hence the need for housekeeping.

    Hey.

The fan is exactly the same as the picture you posted. under Stock Hs

I bought a new fan, installed it. Its silent, but theirs a problem.
The rpm is now 3000 and the temp is now 88 C and the pc is randomly rebooting. The temps are as follows -
    System - 44c
    Cpu - 88 c
    aux 51 c
    hd0 40 c

  13. Bold Eagle

    Bold Eagle MajorGeek

    The problem wasn't the FAN.

  14. pearce88

    pearce88 Private E-2

But its silent now and it wasnt before.

The guy said that the previous fan wasnt attached to the motherboard correctly, and didn't line up, causing the fan to work much harder which in turn made it louder.

Your PC isn't running and 88C will kill the CPU in a week or 2 at best!

  16. pearce88

    pearce88 Private E-2

ok what do you suggest? I've already bought a brand new fan as suggested.

  17. pearce88

    pearce88 Private E-2

I put the old fan on the new silver thing, and the fan is silent, and the pc is slightly cooler, still 69 C.
So im unsure on what to do next.

I keep reading this and have come to the conclusion that you are in danger of frying your CPU.

the new fan you bought did it come with a heat sink attached or are you using the old one (i think you are referring to it as the silver thing)
Whichever the case the PC store should have sold you a very small tube or syringe of thermal paste with it, this helps the the heat sink transfer the heat from the CPU and without it the unit will over heat.

First you must clean the old parts and then add three or four small blobs of the past between the heat sink and the CPU then press them together to spread the past finally put the whole thing back in the motherboard.

If you continue to use the PC without doing this you risk a very expensive burn out!!!!

Hi they did not give me a tube of thermal paste but their was some attached to the heatsink they sold me. They sold me the heatsink and the fan in one kit.

Are you sure 70 degrees celcius will harm the pc? it doesnt feel hot at all.

Can you provide a link of the HS you bought or at least the make on model of it so we can post proper "installation" guides. I would guess at the moment that either it isn't installed properly and thus has poor contact and thus high CPU temps or you have an extremely poor quality TIM on the unit.

Running a CPU at 70C will kill the vast majority of CPU's and or shorten their life significantly.

    http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm

You will see that the vast majority there have an "upper critical threshold" of 70C or less, especially the Intel.

    Hey.

    This is what happened.
I took the fan and heatsink to a repair shop yesterday, and he said the joiners on the heat sink are stuffed, so the heat sink wouldnt attach to the motherboard properly, which supposedly causes the fan to work much harder to retain low heat.
He gave me abrand new one, it has no brand, its exactly the same as the other one except the heatsink is slightly smaller. About 1 centimeter shorter than the other one.
    The fan is the same.
I got him to attach the heatsink which took him an hour and cost me 100 dollars.

The fan cost me 50 dollars. Its a fair bit of cash for me to spend on pc and I am unhappy that it is still not fixed. Current temperature is 80 degrees celcius and i have air conditioner on and a fan blowing straight into the pc.

Ouch he has ripped you off I'm afraid and I would be taking it back and highlighting that the problem has not been fixed! Those fans are $8-10 at most and you would have been able to buy arguably one of the best HS for less than $100. A stock Intel HS (or equivalent product) costs about $10:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010110574 1371026035&name=LGA 775

An excellent product and far superior to the Intel style HS for $29 is:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835202005

I would confront this guy and warn him that you will be talking to the Better Business Bureau to formalise a complaint about such ridiculous pricing and try and demand a refund!

    http://www.bbb.org/'

It takes 10 minutes at most to fit a stock type of HS (about 1/2 down the page):

    http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reseller/asmo-na/eng/216411.htm

Damn I'm feeling very angry for you at the way this "shonky/shady" rep has treated you his business should definitely be reported to the BBB!

  27. pearce88

    pearce88 Private E-2

Yeah I had a feeling I was being ripped off, I asked if it comes with warranty and he said it will not have problems in the future.

What exactly does a heatsink do? Its nothing but some steel cylinder shaped object, certainly it doesnt run the pc or anything? Im thinking it could just be something to keep the pc warm? I am most likely incorrect.

Thankyou very much for all the help thus far. It is appreciated.

You have to delve into the realms of metallurgy to understand fully what it does.

Aluminum and copper are among the best metals that conduct (transfer) heat so a heatsink is normally aluminum sometimes with a copper base and when the CPU gets warm it transfers the heat to the heatsink, the slots that you see in the heatsink mean that is has a large surface area and the fan is set to draw air across these slots thereby dispersing the heat into the air inside the case and your other fans move it out of the case.

the paste that goes between the heatsink and the CPU is designed to give a better contact between them and allow more heat to be dispersed.

  29. Bold Eagle

    Bold Eagle MajorGeek

Great explanation BILL. It is basically designed to "draw" and thus transfer heat from your CPU.

Hopefully you can sort something out with that "shonky" trader. At the bare minimum get the BBB involved and hopefully they will start some form of dispute resolution with him on your behalf. Not really sure how it works in your country but in Australia they will often start some form of communication on your behalf. If you make any contact with him try and do it via email so you can keep a "log" of your efforts.
