    Hello:

On Wednesday of this week, there was a power surge in my building. As a result, my system would not start at all.

I took the system to my computer store and they confirmed that the power supply was fried, and that certain parts of the motherboard had swelled. They recommend getting a new computer.

The person also said that the swelled components could be due to the age of the computer (purchased in 2000). I am using a power supply from the store for the next week to make a current backup, and ensure I have everything I need.

Can anyone tell me direction in terms of the next steps involved?

I have a recent backup from January 2006, all my CD's from my programs, and a list of everything that is on my desktop.

I will be doing a major backup this weekend.

    Thank you:confused:

So are you going to install all your programs? Not the shop? Are they going to set the hardware up?
What Operating Syetem are you using? Make sure you have all your drivers ready. What sort of backup is it?

    >I plan on putting the following on a backup:

    C:/ my documents
    Email
    Address book
    Email messages

And planning on matching my programs to the CD's.

This is the way(s) I use to install win9x. I'm not sure where the ME disc has the necessary files. You will have to change "win95". Have a look at the ME disc & see if there is a folder called 'winme'. If so that's what to change it too. There are probably easier guides but print this out so you can follow it if needed. I prefer the first method. Hope it makes sense. :) At some point you will be asked for your '98 disc'.

1/ With your computer turned off, insert the boot disk.

    Turn on the computer.
When the computer's booted up do the following...

    type FDISK /MBR hit enter
(this destroys the master boot record and re-creates it. You should not see anything on the screen.) All information is lost.

    type FORMAT C: /U /S hit enter
(this will format your hard drive and "SYS" it. This means install the system files needed to boot up. When it's done you may enter a name for this drive if you wish.)

Reboot the computer with the boot disk.

    Type C: hit enter

    Type MD CABS hit enter

    Type X: hit enter
(where "X" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM make sure your Win95 CD is in the CD-ROM drive!)

    Type CD WIN95 hit enter

Type COPY *.* C:\CABS hit enter
(what you've done is, you've made a folder called "cabs" on your hard drive, then copied all the files needed from your Win95 CD-ROM to that folder. This way you will install from your hard drive. Then, in the future if Win95 needs any files, it will automatically get them from there. Also I've found that some people have a problem getting their CD-ROM to be recognized by Win95. If that were to happen during the Win95 installation, you wouldn't be able to finish the install. This method avoids this problem.)

Reboot the computer without the boot disk. NOTE: If you're using an upgrade CD to do the install, skip step 10, and start the install while you're booted off the bootdisk, this way you will have CD-ROM support when Windows wants proof. At that point simply put your Win9x CD in, point to it in the browser, then put your install CD back in. Remember to remove the boot disk before the next reboot!

    Type CD CABS hit enter

    Type SETUP hit enter
(here you go! just follow the on-screen instructions and (hopefully *grin*) you will successfully install Win95!)

2/With your computer turned off, insert the boot disk.

    Turn on the computer.
When the computer's booted up do the following...

    Type FDISK /MBR hit enter
(this destroys the master boot record and re-creates it. You should not see anything on the screen.)

Type FORMAT C: /U hit enter
(this will format your hard drive when it's done you may enter a name for this drive if you wish.)

Reboot the computer with the boot disk.

    Type X: hit enter
(where "X" is the drive letter for your CD-ROM)

    Type CD WIN95 hit enter

    Type SETUP hit enter
(and away you go. follow the on-screen instructions and good luck.)
