Computer Freezes

My IBM T42 laptop has been amazing for over 2 and a half years. Recently it started freezing on me. When it freezes everything locks up, and I have to power down then start back up. It happens a few times a day. What can I do to find the problem, assuming it is a hardware issue?

 

Oh I also just upgraded the RAM, could that be the issue?

 

I would think that the memory upgrade would be the place to start. I've experienced this problem with notebooks when upgrading the memory to the maximum that the motherboard/bios supports. Try downloading and running this,

I cannot get that memtest program to install. All I get is a folder with an ima file and a readme. The readme says to boot from a CD. What should I do?

 

You will need to burn this to a cd, then boot from cd. ed

Ok I did that, and it ran through the test but nothing seemed to happen. Anything else I need to do here, or does that mean it found no problem?:confused

 

Anyone? It did not fix the problem because my computer froze on me again.

 

Just to see, put your old RAM back in and see if it stops freezing up. That might help narrow it down.

 

Isn't there a way to check the other stuff first? I do not have the old RAM at school with me.

 

What was the memory you upgraded to?
