Hi. I'm working on my laptop which is freezing on startup. I formatted the hard disk to sort this but found that it wasnt the problem when i removed it from the laptop and rebooted with windows 7 and linux os dvds and saw it still freezing. Its not even blue screening, its just freezing at the very first windows logo and not moving. Is there any way I could sort this? I've also tried updating the bios, but nothing changed. My laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E525) is void of warranty.

Hi my friend , welcome to MG's :major

You can remove the hdd hooking up in another machine ( desktop for instance ) to check if works or not , you can even give your model exactly :wave

Hi thankyou.:) The other laptop specs are
    Type: 1200-2JG
    ID: 12002JG

I think theres a few more things I should say. It belonged to my brother and he recently gave it to me. He just told me that he had it sent in for repairs some months back for the same issue and the technician said that it was a motherboard issue. So he paid for the motherboard to be replaced and it was working again. Now, not even a full year later its doing the same thing. I have no idea what could have caused this to happen both times.

I've run a check disk on the hard drive and it found no errors. I've also tried booting the laptop without the hard drive by removing it from the laptop and using windows 7, and xp install cds to boot.

This should have booted into an install windows screen and after a bit of looking it should have given me the option to show the available drives that the os could be installed on and because I removed the hard drive it should have shown me nothing. However, it kept freezing at the windows logo. So it couldn't have been the hard drive.

Ive also tried a different stick of ram from a new laptop and there has been no change.

So its not the RAM and its not the Hard drive. All suggestions are appreciated.

Another thing Ive also just found is that when I put a cd into the internal optical drive, its saying CMOS checksum bad (This might be from the update), but when I use external cd reader. It pick up the cd and reads it no problem, that is until it freezes (the same issue I started this thread for)

I've also only just found that when I put a cd into the internal optical drive and try to boot from it, the laptop says cmos checksum bad and gives me option to continue (f1) or to enter setup (f2). However, when I use external cd reader, it works fine until it hangs of course (the issue I started this thread for).
