I've run SAS and it hasn't detected any problems, yet my computer keeps freezing at various stages. Once the screensaver comes up, it freezes and won't start back up. It also freezes while I'm currently using it. Most of the time it freezes, the screen is stuck in "preparing to standby". Also, each time I start the computer, it fails to load the active desktop, and instead I just have an error for a desktop. What can I do?

i would suggest running chkdsk to see if you have bad sectors on your hard drive or try running memtest to see how the memory is good luck

Here are my logs. SAS didn't find anything so there was no log.

How about your temps? While in the OS use EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 Computer>>>>>>Sensor>>>>and gives us an idea of what's occurring here.

Not sure what the "OS" is.

Could you give me better directions? Because I'm not sure what you want me to do here.

The "OS" stands for "operating system" ie, are you using Vista or XP.

If you go to run and type "dxdiag" [without the quotes] it will brigng up a box with a few details about your 'puter

The first troubleshooting step I'd do is turn off the screensaver. That eliminates one problem to have to troubleshoot.

You can turn it back on after the computer appears to be working properly.

As explained by Q, if you can get into the OS again EVEREST will display a lot of the "sensors" from your PC, this can give you information on current temps, volts and fan speeds and is generally an excellent place to start from. High temps can be a primary cause of instability.

    Windows XP

    Sensor type: HDD

    Temperatures:
    CPU: 52 C (126F)
    Toshiba MK1246GSX: 47 C (115F)

UPDATE: I got a blue screen error and it said that the problem appears to be caused by "ati2dvag".

    Short term

    Start>control panel>display>settings>advanced>troubleshootingtab

Reduce the 'hardware acceleration' by moving slider to left.
    Do this in small increments.

    Long term

look for a better driver for your (ATI) graphics card. This driver may be older or newer.

Ok, I did the control panel fix...

Hmmm. The computer is less than a year old. I'm not expert, but I have a hard time believing that this is the problem. Could I possibly provide more information about my computer for analyzation? If so, what?

See Bold Eagle's post 7 for a tool that will create a log that you can attach here to help us understand your settings/PC better :).

I'm just not getting it, so either you're leaving something out or I'm missing something. I think I've posted that information already. I click "Computer" then "Sensor" and a few things pop up. Temperatures and sensor properties. It's about 13 words total. Is that what you want?

    Sensor Type: HDD

    Temperatures:
    CPU 46 °C (115 °F)
    TOSHIBA MK1246GSX 48 °C (118 °F)

And that's ALL it says. Is there something else I need to do?

    I asked for system details.

You didn't make it clear this is a laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501)

    See review

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3359

This machine is basically underpowered for what you may be asking of it.
    Is it still under guarantee?
Does the freezing occur on all programs or just some?
Does it occur if the wireless is turned off?
AOL is a notorious time waster
What do you do to recover from a 'freeze' ?

What are your power saving and hibernation settings?

    It happens CONSTANTLY.

    Basically:

-Every 20 minutes or so during use, it will freeze and I can't get out of it no matter what I try. I have to restart.

-100.0% of the time when I shut the laptop, it freezes on the standby screen upon reopening it and there's nothing I can do to get out of it except restart.

My power saving options used to just be what it came with (I didn't alter them) and I was having this problem. Now I turned off hibernate and all put everything on "never" because I can't get it out of standby or hibernation mode.

If there's any other information I can provide, I'd be happy to do it.

I did say look for a better version of ATI drivers.

I notice that there are some new versions here just listed on the home page at Major Geeks

    (ATI catalyst)

OK if it still freezez after turning off power controls and hibernation,

    What about my other questions?
You will need to plod through them by aprocess of elimination.

I'm having trouble installing an updated version of the ATI driver. It says it's not compatible with my system. I used my Dell's built in support center and made sure I had everything updated, but I still was not able to update to the latest ATI driver.

Another problem I'm having is downloading the lastest firefox update. It downloads it fully than says it failed and asks if I have another version of firefox running, which I don't.

Hey endless, for your firefox issue......

download the latest version of the firefox installer, restart your PC and then either uninstall firefox and reinstall fresh [recommended] or just try to install firefox without uninstalling first and it will ask you if you want to upgrade or do a repair install or somehting similar.

No luck. Thanks anyway guys, I guess I'm just going to have to reformat or something. I ran into too many problems to list while trying to follow those steps and I don't even know if that would to prove to be the solution anyway.

Alright, it's been a while so I'm not clear on what I did, but basically, I screwed up my computer even worse trying to fix it. The strange part is, this happened when I downloaded what I thought was a neccesary update from the Dell site itself. I believe it was an ATI driver or possibly another software update. I entered my laptop model and came to a section of the site that displayed different updates, and it ranked how neccesary they were for my laptop.

After I did this, I shut down and tried to start up, but the monitor was now blank, despite that I heard the startup sounds.

Boot a linux live CD just to see if the video chip is alive. If the screen is still black when booting linux, then it is not a windows problem but a hardware problem - dead video chip.
