I'd recommend both Everest and Belarc Advisor, be used on any PC.

Belarc, in particular, will prompt you to keep your MS updates up-to-date, and tell you which ones are missing. In XP Pro, it will even rate your system security out of 10.

This goes a bit overboard for home user stand-alone systems but is still a guide to prompt you to check out security stuff.

Both programs give you lots of info on Hardware and Software on your PC.

Belarc really delves a lot deeper than Everest.

Use them both, IMHO. ;) :D Bazza
