Computer is blacking out.

My computer keeps blacking out on me when I go to play any game on steam.

Primarily Modern Warfare 2.


It doesn't seem to be running hot and when the computer freezes I can still
hear sound in the background and I cannot open task manager.

Compaq Presario model # - CQ532OY

amd athlon 2

It has a GeForce 210 graphics card.

Any help would be appreciated.

What operating system version and Service Pack # are you using?

My first guess would be a problem with your video drivers. You might consider either going to the Compaq driver page for you model or to nVidia, plug in your OS, and grabbing the latest drivers.

If you decide to go this route, I suggest uninstalling your present drivers, running Driver Sweeper to make sure everything's clean, then installing the new software.

You might also consider powering down, make sure all fans, etc. are clean, and reseating your graphics card and RAM module(s).

 

My son had the exact problem a couple of years ago.
The symptoms were....

Play game for anywhere from 2-30 minutes, then screen would go black, nothing at all on it but you could still here the game and about half the time it would then power down after a minute or so unless I powered it down manually.
The cause.... Graphics card overheating.

You said it doesn't "Seem" to run hot, is this a guess from the feel of your hand or have you seen temps?

Install "Speccy" available on this site.
Note temps at idel
Fire up game and run for a minute or so.
Note temps again.

It could be drivers as Caliban suggested but my gut leans more towards GPU overheating. It's a common problem especially on a laptop.
