Computer Is Freezing Up

My windows computer is experiencing all kinds of problems, and is getting worse.

About a week ago the screen would go blank about once a day and show nothing except the mouse cursor. Nothing would get it going again, except unplugging it.

About the same time the mouse cursor would start to flicker between two positions for a while, and then stop.

This morning I got a blue screen with a message that there was an error and a full report would be written to session_bbbbbbb. I didn't write it down (the bs are just placeholders) because I figured I could just search for session_* but nothing came up. It also said it would reboot and done, but it never rebooted.

A bit later it warned me that I was low on memory, but when I checked it said I was using 44%.
Now it is just freezing up. I can open a new browser window and that is fine, until it freezes also.

All the problems have occurred when I was using Thunderbird, but that is what I use the computer for 90% of the time.

Part of the Belarc output is attached. Let me know if anything else would be helpful.

I have run three virus programs, cleaned up the registry, and run diagnostic software on the harddrive with nothing unusual showing up.

Anything I can do to save this? Thanks

When I try to install it, I get an error message. A new problem?

    Third time was a charm.
It has been stuck on "Scanning and repairing drive c: 11% complete" for 30 minutes now. I am beginning to lose hope.

Did you run the program in Safe Mode?

It takes a long time to run...just have patience.

You tell it to run on next start, and then reboot. It then runs before loading windows.
It got to 11% in a couple minutes and then just hung for 30 minutes. I tried again with the same result.
I rebooted and told it not to scan. It loaded Windows normally.
I will try again from the beginning.

    As TimW posted, have patience.
The more problems there are, the longer it will take.

Ran it again. This time it offered to do a pre-check and fixed 5 reparse points and a dozen environmental variables. Don't know why it didn't do that the first time.

This time it said my hard drive was fine and didn't have to be scanned and repaired. (that is where it hung at 11%, never made it to the actual registry repair section)

The registry repairs took an hour and it came back up. Is there a log somewhere to tell me if it fixed anything?

I think it said to run the whole thing twice. Is that correct?

    yes.

    Okay, ran it twice.
I've used it quite a bit today. Once the mouse cursor flickered for a while and then stopped. More significant, the resolution changed to 640x480, and the system said that was the maximum possible. I rebooted and it was okay. So maybe it is better (nothing has actually frozen) but it sure isn't right.

    Any suggestions?

has this been solved? if not my recommendation would be running spybot1.6.2 in safemode, and if this yields no results, attempt a rootkit scan. kapersky has a good rootkit removal tool for free. if neither of those yield a response, try using seagate HDD consistency check. see if its a result of bad sectors. have any of your system32 files been altered recently? could be a malfunctioning .dll, but doubtful. was there any new programs you installed or updates you did before this started happening? did you visit any unfamiliar websites and if so which one? have you ran any antivirus programs yet such as AVG or avast or bitdefender?

please do everything in safemode to help prevent further issues.

ok so since i read this forum and posted my replies i have found two other threads that lead me to believe the source of these glitches, crashes and errors is the 1607 update for win10, we need to know sue, if you installed that 1607 update, the info can be found in the windows update center, as to what your latest update version is. if it is 1607 i think your problem may be linked to that update, for 2 other people i have found on this forum are having very similar issues to yours. my advice to them was to uninstall the update and roll back to 1511, but please confer with a higher ranking geek for further instructions.

If you open the OP's Belarc Advisor image attachment in post #1 it is not the 1607 update - their OS is Win 10 1511-10586, so doesn't look like it was related to the latest build.

I continue to have the same problems:
    1) It freezes and there is no way to continue except to unplug it; a couple times a day
    2) The cursor flickers and nothing works. It goes away in a few minutes
    3) a 1" square of randomly colored pixels appears. It does no harm, but is annoying. I tried to snip it to show you, but the snip does not show the defect, just what is underneath.

    Attached are:
    1) the log of what crashed
    2) the log of the scanning program
(well I uploaded a few and then it said I could only do 5. any ones in particular you need)

I have not run anything unusual. I have run malwarebytes, super antispyware, and Panda anti-virus. They show nothing. I can try spybot and the root kit. How do I get into safemode? Should the three I ran have been in safe mode?

I really do appreciate your help and am sorry I know so little.

Start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10

See the above link to get into Safe Mode. Tweaking should normally be run in that mode.

The crash log is barely readable. You need a focused screen shot of that window using alt + Prt Scr buttons, rather than ctrl + prt scr.

Both crashes were from the same cause:
    STOP 0x000000BA: SESSION_HAS_VALID_VIEWS_ON_EXIT
    Usual causes: A bug in win32k.sys, atmfd.dll, rdpdd.dll, or a video driver
    ...
    Cause
This error is caused by a session driver not unmapping its mapped views prior to a session unload. This indicates a bug in win32k.sys, atmfd.dll, rdpdd.dll, or a video driver.

From Device Manager, try Rolling back the video driver.

(for XP but it's not changed much):

Device Driver Roll Back reinstalls the driver you were using previously and restores any driver settings that were changed when you added the new driver. Note that you cannot restore printer drivers with Device Driver Roll Back. To roll back a device driver to a previous version :
    1. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrative privileges.
    2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    3. Under Pick a category, click Performance and Maintenance.
    4. Under or pick a Control Panel icon, click System.
    5. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
    6. In the device list, expand the device type branch that you want to work with. For example, Display adapters.
    7. Right-click the device that you want to work with, and then click Properties.
    8. On the Driver tab, click Roll Back Driver. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you would like to roll back to the previous driver?
    9. The previous device driver is restored. Click Close.
    10. Quit Device Manager, and then click OK.

From crashed.JPG the problem was caused by ntkrnlmp.exe.

So the Windows kernel caused it? Yeah, right ;)

It looks first for 3rd party drivers (non-Windows) in the stack dump, if none are listed, it defaults to the last driver, probably the Windows driver calling for the halt because it's detected a fault, the offending driver having already fled the scene, leaving only the smoking gun.

I ran all the virus software in safe mode. Spybot picked up Montara Toolbar, which it said was serious, but everything else said was just a PUP. (the tweak software was always run in safe mode)
I also ran the video driver back. The machine automatically updated it, so that was maybe pointless.

It continues to freeze every couple hours with a flickering cursor. I have found though that the taskbar at the bottom is NOT frozen. If I close Inet Explorer there, I can reopen it and all is well until the next freeze. I cannot honestly say if that was or was not always true.
The fuzzy square has not reoccurred, but that was always rarer.

Could Inet Explorer be the problem and maybe I should change to another browser? Big nuisance if it can't help. Blessing if it could. Thanks.

The only way to find out is surf with a different browser such as Firefox or Chrome.

All of the above could be graphics/video-related, taken all together, it's pretty sure to be.

We need to know where the monitor connects to on the rear of the PC, the connections below are those on your motherboard - but they need to be turned clockwise 90 degrees to match your tower. The onboard graphics would output from either 3 or 4, if you have your monitor connected in approximately the position of the #6 label, below the audio jacks, you have an add-in graphics card - which is it?

I guess TimW will give you advice on the Montera/Babylon toolbar later, when he checks in next.

Agreed. I was going to suggest just reinstalling the video driver in SafeMode, since there is a good chance that will take care of the issues you just listed. The Belarc attached to the OP points to this HP model.

It also says TC is using Windows 10, which is a little bit problematic, since HP has not seen fit to provide Windows 10 specific drivers for that particular desktop. The Windows 8 drivers may work, but that would be a gamble at this point. This page HP has provided has more info about drivers for Windows 10. click on Microsoft windows to get some suggestions on how to work around the lack of Win10 drivers from HP.

I changed from Inet Explorer to Edge and have had no problems in 4 days. Could all the problems be due to the browser?
Earlier I reverted to a completely generic video driver (nothing seemed to change). Any advantage to updating it, or leave well enough alone.
If it matters, it is a VGA cable.

Try Firefox or Opera and see if it still happens.

I had the same problems. If you have a wireless mouse, see if there is a reset button on the mouse OR in my case, a tiny bump on the USB stick that communicates with the mouse. By pressing the reset for about 5 seconds my mouse is stable as is 1607.
Prior to that my mouse was erratic and the OS seemed out of control. The only difference is I did not have BSOD.

Then your problems, similar though they may be, are from a completely different cause, Peter.

I thought it was worth a try but I see your logic.
Can you explain why a simple reset of the stick for the mouse would settle it and the PC down.
