Computer is so slow. Help!

    Hi,
    My computer is running so slow that some web pages won't even load. Then others are fine. I am running Windows XP SP2 and my browser is Firefox 4. I am on broadband, so it seems like things should be running faster. I use avast for antivirus, along with Spybot, Regscrub XP, and CCleaner. Any help would be appreciated. I need to get online for my class.

    Start - Run - (write msconfig ) - sixth tab ( startup ) - uncheck some ticks - Apply - ok , windows will ask you to reboot your system , do it , after reboot will be better , what is you pc specifications and what is the capacity of your hdd , how much is the free space ? :tas

    While you could just disable some startup programs from slowing your computer from startup it would be much easier to look at Task Manager (right-click the taskbar on the bottom of the screen) and look at how many processes are running. If I recall correctly, XP should normally be around 35-42 processes depending on what you have installed in your system.

    This is not good. MS stopped supporting SP2 July 13, 2010. This means you have received no patches in almost 11 months.
    Run Malwarebytes to be sure you are clean.

    Although it says $24.95 you can scan for free and do manual updates without ever paying for the program.
    Running an antivirus is good, however, the majority of infections now a says are not viruses. They are trojans, worms and rootkits so you should have something more than av.
