My damn computer keeps rebooting when under any strain.. Playing certain video games, watching videos frame-by-frame, etc..

My processor is an AMD Athlon XP 2000+, supposed to run at 1.7 gigs.. Unfortunately, it is extremely unstable at that, and I have to run it at 1.2 gigs to even get it to work.

I've been living with it thus far, but now when I try to install WoW, the computer keeps rebooting 3/4s through the install.

Any ideas guys? I've got one fan on my processor, and one fan on the side. The case is open.

    Included DxDiag.

Bump - Anyone have any ideas?

I really don't know why it's so messed up - Everything except my processor is brand new.

I'm thinking about ordering a new processor and seeing if that does anything.. Any recommendations on a decent processor under $150?

what's the temps on your board?

    cpu temp =?
    board temp = ?

    case setup =?

    powersupply =?

PS is 480W Silent Purepower. It's new, along with the mobo and other stuff.. Upgraded about 4-5 months ago.

I downloaded Motherboard Monitor, and it's telling me Case is 29d C and CPU is 64d C

Gonna try and go into BIOS to get temp reading.

I'm not sure what you mean by case setup?

BIOS told me the same thing.. Processor 63d C, Mobo 29d C

    EDIT:

Was checking out processors.. Found this one, seems to be the best for the amount of $$.

    What do you guys think?

    http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-103-394&DEPA=1

Or would upgrading to a faster processor make even more problems for me?

I personally think it's the processor heat that's the problem, but person that knows about computers that I talked to says it's not - He says maybe my processor is faulty.

Any chance it has to do with RAM? I've got 512 PC3200 I think.

what i mean is how many fans they are, what is the direction of the airflow if any fans,

cpu temp is a bit high...but mbm5 is funny sometimes,

check if cpu heatsink is properly seated, a xp2200 running 1.2ghz should not under any circumstance ( idle ) be running at 62...

    under 100% load *maybe*

my 2400+ (2ghz) is running 58C with stock cooler under load...

  7. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

The heatsink should be seated properly - I changed the fan that sits on the processor when I first had the problems, but it didn't do anything. Heatsink & fan on processor is new.

The fan on the processor is blowing air in, I think.

I've got another fan on the side, blowing air out the back - It doesn't seem to work all that well, it's kind of old.

Both sides of the case are open for air flow.

Maybe I'll go down to computer store tomorrow and buy a replacement fan for the side, see if that does anything.

You think the temp has to do with the processor itself, maybe it's fried or something?

Or the lack of air the processor is getting?

    Hi,

The cpu itself is not the problem, most likely the hs is mounted incorrectly, When you installed the hs did it have a thermal pad or did you use some type of paste?

I recomend removing it and cleaning with isopropyl alcohol then reinstall with artic silver5 following the directions from there web site. The problems you describe sound like they are directly related to cpu overheat and 64c is hot even if the sensor is off a bit.

eeewwwww..... Sounds like bad capacitors on the motherboard to me, if you look at the motherboard and see cylinder shaped objects standing up in rows, take alook at the top them, are they flat at the top (which they should be) or are they rounded or even better yet, have some type brown fabric looking stuff coming out of them? I don't know if you will smell them leaking but do they smell like fish?

I've seen this happen on a few motherboards for the Athlons.

It would probably run hot. An improper mounting will almost certainly result in a high thermal resistance at the interface between the die and the heatsink.

I'd say an idling temp over 50c was hot. My AMD 2500+ idles in the low 40's. Running SETI pushes that up by 5-6c only. That's with the stock HSF. My wife's AMD 2600+ runs at about 45c under full load (SETI) -- also with the stock HSF.

Your motherboard temp is low for a CPU running as hot as yours. That suggests to me that you've got good airflow, but the heatsink isn't doing its job. Here's a rough way to test that: if you can touch the base of the heatsink without burning your finger after the system has been running for a while, that heatsink is nowhere near as hot as the CPU -- which would suggest to me that it's not drawing heat off the CPU like it should.

Doby has a point -- it's pretty easy to overdo the thermal paste. The idea is to use just enough to be sure that there is no air in the layer between the die and the heatsink. Thermal paste is a better heat conductor than air -- but it's not a good conductor compared to copper or aluminum. The paste needs to be as thin as you can get it and still do the job.

Check out Arctic Silver's instruction page for AS5 here -- and note their statement "Properly lapped heatsinks with mirror finishes will only require a translucent haze."

By the base of the heatsink, you mean the side? Like the walls of it? I touched that part, and it's warm, but not "hot" at all..

My comp has been running pretty much all day yesterday and overnight.

I'm going to try and take off the heatsink, reapply the paste, and put it back on .. See if that does anything for me.

    Appreciate the help folks.

Oh, and the bottoms of the cylinders on the bottom of the mobo are flat - The mobo is only a few months old.

  18. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Oh, I'm not sure if my paste is AS5 - It's just whatever came with the heatsink.

Is it important to use that paste specifically? If so, I'll go out and buy some of that stuff.

Is there any chance my heatsink might be damaged due to improper installation?

  19. suesman

    suesman First Sergeant

AS5 is just very good paste is all. I use that with a cheapo Speeze all copper HS & a Coolermaster Areo7 blower on it & my 2400+ is running 37c right now, a bit cooler depending on the room temp, but never over 45c under full load.

I wouldn't think the heatsink would be damaged in any way from not having paste on it.

I do agree with Rob that your case seems to have decent airflow. I'd say run out & get some better paste, apply it exactly as the website says to, then see what ya got. Make sure to clean all the old paste off the HS & CPU.

  20. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Ok, bad idea.. I don't like playing with expensive toys. :(

I took off the heatsink, cleaned off all the paste (There was a lot of it, too much I would think), then reapplied what would be called a "thin layer"

Turned on my computer, and it turned right back off. Tried it again, same results.

Took off heatsink again, put on a little more paste, turned on computer and it started yelling at me.. All sorts of things Failed. I go into Bios and processor is running 69d C..

I don't know what to do now.. Small amount of paste didn't work.. Too much paste didn't work.

Now I'm all out of paste, and my computer doesn't work - Posting this from another computer in the house.

I guess I'm gonna have to go out and buy some new paste, the AS5 stuff, and see what it does for me.

I think my processor might be fried by now..

If my heatsink was mounted improperly, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I put it on and clip it on.

Went out to Best Buy, and their awesome selection had 1 type of thermal paste.. and it wasn't the AS5.

$12 for a tube of Dynex something or other Silver Thermal Compound - Anyway, gonna clean off the old stuff, put this on, and hope it works. Maybe put on a little more this time, if my CPU isn't fried yet.

  22. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Ok, well I put on new paste, started it up and it was running like 91d C .. Turned it off - I don't know what to do anymore.

  23. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Took off the heatsink, changed the direction of the fan to blow air out, turned it on, Something something failed, and it turns off.

I get the feeling my processor is fried - Input?

I'll probably be ordering a new processor, and hopefully won't have the same problems with the new one - Is it possible that my heatsink is broken or is there no such thing? It doesn't seem like too technical a device, just a copper block.

What do you guys think of this processor?

Ok, it is possible to put the hs on backwords, look at the hs it has a stepped portion. Make sure the steped portion is facing the end of the socket that reads "socket 462".

Look at it closely in good light, make sure it is not on the edge of the plastic socket before you put the clips on. This the best way I can describe it and it is not that difficult if you are careful.

The fan needs to blow in on the hs and processor to be affective.

If you get it running we will talk about your ram you may have to do a ajustment to get totally stable, let us know your progress.

  27. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Ok, I apparently had it on backwards.

I changed it to have the stepped portion face the socket 462, then I tried to start the computer that way and it just turned right back off. It wouldn't run with the thing facing 462.

I changed it back to the "wrong" way and it's now running.. I've got it running at like 1.2 gigs I think, and it's running 55d C with no strain.. Just started.

When you say that it shouldn't be on the edge.. Do you mean that to make sure that they are locked in, and that the HS is not on top of the socket 462 plastic thing?

I've messed around with the paste in varying levels - Right now, I think I have too much on, but at least it's running.

  28. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Ok Ok! I tried it again, put some more paste on it, and now got it running at 62d C Idle at the 1.7 it's supposed to be at.

    Hopefully, it won't overheat.

I think the problem the whole time was that I had the heatsink on backwards.

Hopefully it will continue to work like this.. But if it doesn't, how can I get that 62 down?

I feel very stupid now.

Appreciate all the help folks! Thanks for filling me in Dolby! :D

D'oh, Spoke too soon! It ran at 63 for a little bit, then it shut down.

Now I've got it back at the 1.2 gig and it's running 57... Still, this is very high.

My heatsink is a little warm, but not hot - Maybe I should leave my computer running a while and see if the heatsink gets hot, to see if it is doing its job?

Is it possible that my processor is running so hot because it is fried from all the time the heatsink has been on backwards?

Well for now I think it may be ok but we will see, for now you need to get the temps down to mid 40's at idle by installing the hs correctly and with the right amount of paste then we will run some tests to check it

  37. GMXMan

    GMXMan Private E-2

Was reading that over.. I think my processor might be damage due to improper installation of the heatsink.. Would that cause it to act the way it does?

  38. Doby

    Doby Sergeant

At this point anything is possible, but if it will post and you can get the temps down or at least get it to the point that it won't reboot then we can do some tests.

The reason I say to a point were it won't reboot is because it is possible that the thermal sensor is reading high giving you high temps. So if the hs is correct and the computer is stable we can figure that out.

I tried as hard as I could to put the HS on properly.. I looked through the link you sent me.

As far as I know or can tell, it's on properly.

Right now I'm running 1.2 gigs 45/46d C, idle.. Just started the comp a minute ago.

  40. Doby

    Doby Sergeant

There is a setting in bios that monitors the cpu temp and makes the computer shut down if the cpu temp gets to high. If you are sure the hs is mounted correct you can turn this off, then it will not shutoff if the sensor is faulty and reading to high. I did not want you to do this before cause if you did not have hs mounted right it would save your cpu.

Well, this is the first time I've had it running in the 40s - So maybe before I had it on top of the plastic thing?

    What's the next step?

I looked through the BIOS and couldn't find what you are talking about.. I looked through the power management section and everything there is disabled.

It seems putting on the heatsink is a lot more technical than it looks.

Its late gatta get some sleep, I will be back tomarow evening. I believe with all you have done and with the links provided to follow that the sensor is bad and reading to high causing the computer to shut down. If you can turn that off in bios, restart and go into bios you can still read the temps, disregard them. very carfully after the computer has been running for 10 minutes or so touch the hs, if you can hold your finger on it for awhile then temps in mid to lower 40c

If you can touch and have to pull away after 3 to 5 seconds the temps = mid 50c

If you touch and have to pull away quickly the temps=60c or higher.

If you think temps are in the 40's try to boot windows and see what happens but don't do any gaming till we try some other things.

I picked on Arctic Silver only because it has a a big following, talks a good line, and (most important) has a good instruction page on its website. I've never actually used it myself -- but if I was going to re-install my heatsink, that's the thermal paste I'd go for.

The heatsinks in my computer and my wife's are what AMD provides in their standard retail box. Those come equipped with thermal phase change tape, which AMD prefers for a permanent installation. Me --I figured that AMD probably knows what it's talking about, so I didn't argue. I used what they provided when I set up both computers.

After I did some research, I came to the conclusion that AMD doesn't want to support thermal paste because phase change tape is less likely to be improperly installed than thermal paste. Others may argue with that....

Your heat sink is not likely to be damaged. It's just a chunk of metal with a mildly complex shape. Your CPU is another thing entirely. A bad installation could fry it. If you can test it in another machine -- or substitute another CPU in yours -- it might be a good thing to try.

  47. Doby

    Doby Sergeant

Don't assume just cause its running that everthing is ok, it still seems to be running hot.

I would like to know what your cpu core voltage is? (VCore). What core is your cpu? (Thorton, thoroughbred, or polomino?) The vcore could be set to high raising the temp of the cpu. You also could have some ram issues.

You are very lucky to be this far, most times if the hs is mounted backwards the cpu overheats and is ruined and the cpu socket on the mobo is broken from being in contact with the hs when the pressure of the clips is put on.

I would like to be sure there are no more problems.
