Computer keeps restarting

Hello,


My computer, located in another room in the house, has been absolutely fine as of late, but a few minutes ago I started it up, and it restarted when I got to the screen with the Windows XP logo and loading bar.

After the computer restarted, a message came up saying that the restart was most likely due to a software update, and I was advised to select the 'Last Known Good Configuration' (or something worded similar to that) option. I selected said option, but when I did this the computer restarted again in exactly the same place.

I tried to go into Safe Mode to see if there is anything I can do, but my computer restarted once the minimum number of files had loaded.

If I have to go to my local computer repair shop then I will, but I was hoping that I would be able to find some help here. Please can somebody let me know where to go from here. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hello again,

I've come back to give some additional information. A few months ago I wanted to make some changes to the registry, so I created a system restore point. If the restore point would be useful in this situation please can somebody let me know if it's possible to access it without logging in or by going into Safe Mode.

Hello,

I don't have the Windows XP CD as it didn't come with the computer. It looks like using the CD is going to be the only way forward because I'm unable to start Windows in normal or safe mode, and I think I'll be unable to access the system restore point I created a few months ago. My local computer repair shop will have the CD, so I'm going to phone them tomorrow and take my PC there in the week sometime.
