Try testing your power supply. A tester should cost you less than $15 US.
Other than that unplug the computer and open it up. Touch the metal frame to ground yourself and try removing all connectors and then reseating them. Do the same for the memory.

The power supply is inside your computer case. You must open up your case to test the different connectors. This may not be something you will want to research a little. Here is a simple tester from CompUSA
that will give you an idea of what you need.
It's a simple test but make sure you ground yourself out before reaching into the case. To ground yourself touch the metal case.

I’m at Dell Headquarters in Austin, Texas and I just came across this thread. It looks like I'm a bit late but if you're still here I'd like to offer my help. If there are other similar machines that you can swap parts with I first reseat all of the components and if that doesn't work see if swapping the power supply does.

Hey man DONT DONT DONT play with the Dell power supply until you read this.

(Oh hi DellCA, glad you are back again - we fixed John's psu)

The first thing to do in your situation is to clean house. That is make sure that your pc is internally clean. Electric equipment attracts dust. Make sure all the fans, including the one in the sealed box labelled power supply are clean along with heatsinks etc. Make sure cables are dressed away from air flow paths.

Secondly get a new battery. They are only $2 or so it is hardly worth testing them. They last 3-5 years and start causing random errors/shutdown when they go low. Look on the mainboard for a metal disk looking a bit like a dime piece. It will be in a press fit holder. Make sure the new one goes in the right way up.

Post again if this lot does not help.

Ok... I've taken the motherboard out of the case and am running it on the box now.
But I don't think its causing the problem as I just used it 2 days ago in my quad core rig.thanx
