Computer locking up and will not run disk defrag

My computer keeps locking up on me and will not complete a disk defrag. I have a compaq with 256 RAM and Pentium III processor. We just upgraded to XP and now we are having these problems. We have a FAT32 system and I have heard there is another system that works better with XP. Can anyone help me?

 

NTFS is the recommended file system for Windows XP and provides a number of benefits in terms of functionality, security, stability, availability, reliability, and performance. There are very few reasons to persist with FAT32.

1. Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

2. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

Thanks for the post, want to change to NTFS, but let me give you this little.
My husband put a partition in the hard drive, saying these were system files. The reason he did this is that another computer we had this and he thought this was a good idea, but this other computer did not have a FAT32. I think this is where the problem is and need to know what to do before I convert to NTFS. As you can see, I'm not a geek when it comes to this stuff and my husband knows just enough to be dangerous. HA HA
