    Hi all,
When I play FEAR my computer sounds like a tank, it is really loud! It never used to be this loud when I played counter strike. Is FEAR more graphically intensive than cs:s?
Temperature after playing FEAR for an hour of my cpu is mid 30's, my gpu is mid to high 50's. Is that to hot?

My mobo monitor tells me that my cpu and gpu fans are running below thresholds. So i looked at what speeds they were running at and my mobo monitor tells me they arent spinning at all!
Everest tells a different story, it says that my gpu fan is going round fine! (I think thats whats making all the noise!) but no info for the cpu fan!

    Specs:
    P4 3.06
    6800gt 128mb
    Asus P.....(micro-atx)(can't remember exact number)

mid 50's is fine for a 6800gt,the stock 6800gt fan is pretty noisy,I'v switch to an nv5 silencer which is silent and my card runs 45c under load

fear I think ios the most graphically intensive game out ATM it could explain why your computer is loud,to find the exact cause of the noise get it running nice and hot to the point its making the noise then slow each fan down individually to isolate the culprit by pressing on it in the middle with your finger to slow it down

try running 3d 05 5-6 times in a row see if the noise returns,if not the only other thing I can think of is the harddrive is doing alot of swapping as fear can use more than a gig of ram,but its pretty obvious when your HD is running hard

P.S 128mb 6800gt,is it an asus card if so I hear they can run pretty hot and some I'v seen dont have ram sinks,FEAR is very heavy on your video card ram,you may see performance increase by playing with your agp aperature size

i hope the end of my finger doesnt end up whizzing round the fan!

Yes it is an Asus card, whats a heat sink? and what is agp aperature size?

LOL just gently touch the centre, you only want to slow it down slightly,if the fan in question is making the noise it will be obvious once you slow it down slightly as noise will quieten down, only for a second then release, once you have located the noisy fan its up to as to what you want to do,add more case fans, buy an aftermarket heatsink"the metal fins under the fans ;) "

AGP aperature size is the amount of system memory allowed for your vid card to cache textures, increasing it may improve performance or may not as system mem is much slower than video mem,you can adjust it by entering bios,it will either be in advanced chipset features or advanced bios features depending on your motherboard, try 128,256 or 512 see if you see an improvement in framerate ;)

I just checked and it is my graohics card making all the racket, kinda takes the fun out of the game. I have to turn the sound up really loud and then I'm jumping off the chair every time that stupid girl pop's up!

I looked up that nv5 silencer you mentioned in your last post, reportedly drops stock temperatures by 20c and makes it quieter!

You would of thought that on a £200+ card (when I bought it) i would have a £20 silencer on it! Ive heard they are hard to fit, is that true?

Its reduced my temps by about 10-15 degrees and its almost silent it was a little tricky to install the mosfet heatsink on my sparkle 6800gt was slightly taller than nvidias reference design stopping me from fitting it flush to the core,I should have returned it but thats not my style

I got my dremel out and cut a hole in the underside of the fan housing, this also draws in air past the heatsink keeping it cooler without impeeding the performance of the fan "AC can have that one for free ;) "

your memory layout is also different from the reference design so it may not fit your card as the mem heatpads wont line up,your card doesnt have any cooling on the memory anyway does it?

might be a good idea to have a look at AC's site,I will check if I have time ;)

    just read this

    http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/arctic_cooler_nv5_silencer/

I plug my nv5 into a system fan jack on the mobo as it runs the fan faster as you can see in the picture.

Thanks for all the info Rikky, I saw an nv5 silencer for £25 might treat myself to one :D

Yes it is an Asus card my dad used to be an electrician so he could help with the wiring!

Im not sure if I would want to do it myself because from what I have read it will require a lot of patience and time. I am only blessed with one of them (I'm a student so I'll let you guess which one I am blessed with :p)

If i took it in to a computer shop, how much do you think they should charge to fit it?

I might take it this place in Golborne, its not far from me (Chorley) I've heard about this guy there that is a wizard with all things technical!:p

Small world :),You have to get your hands dirty some time,it does take patience,I sat there looking at it for an hour after intalling it to see where I'd gone wrong,I then had to make the decision of sending it back or cutting a hole in it and have no possibility of sending it back and losing my 6 year warranty on the cooler, all the while my £260 6800gt was just waiting for me to spill coffee on it,--but my my card runs cool and is silent

you just have to want it,it depends how much longer you can stand the noise of it

A doubt a computer shop would do it for you, worth a try I suppose, the thing is your voiding your warranty by removing the stock cooler, you have to be smart about it,I have the stock cooler in pristine condition with the original heatpaste on ready to be reinstalled if I have to return the card

i had to do the same thing with mine, except I used wire cutters and a razor as the plastic isn't too strong.

I think I'll give it a go, ill get the card next week and start trying straight away! ill post back in about 3 months when I have either done it or failed miserably! Probably the latter!

Just as a pre-caution is it possible to run my computer without a graphics card? I know games wont run but what about anything else?
Im 6'3" and have hands like shovels so messing with computer parts isnt really my strong point! Ill let u know how it goes!
