    Hi,

I checked my System Management Log and it's filled with Warnings from userenv and Errors from WinMgmt. I'm attaching a copy of the log. All of the entries can be deleted but they will reappear when my pc performs the same actions, which it seems to do often.

What's wrong with my pc that I keep gettings these Warning and Error Messages?

Hi Denise, if you double click one of those events ( WinMgmt ) it will give you an Event Properties box, which will have a description of the problem, can you post that as it may give clue as to what is faulting.

It shouldnt be harming your PC, but some application that uses Windows Managment Instrumenation is causing an error, maybe just an old program you have uninstalled, DID you by any chance have Windows OneCare installed?

    Hi Halo,

I did have Windows OneCare installed, but in msconfig, it's "stopped." I must have stopped it when I stopped several Services, such as iPod and Retrospect, which I don't need.

When I opened Computer Management just after receiving your reply, the warnings and Error Messages were for different things. . . userenv and WinMgmt aren't on the list. Today, the list contains errors and warnings for SidebySide, Service Control Manager, User32, W32Time, DCOM, ntfs, ftdisk and disk. When I click one of the errors or warnings for each category, the explanation is as ambiguous as the error and warning. For example, for SidebySide, the Event Properties box states

I did a search including system and hidden folders for Microsoft.VC80.CRT and found a folder x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd. The folder was empty. What happened to the files that were in it?

For other warnings and errors, when I clicked on the link, I received the following definition/solution to "disk" and some other errors and warnings for the three categories that are given: Suggested Topics, Full-test Search Matches, and Microsoft Knowledge Base:

For some items, such as w32time, I typed net start w32time at the command prompt and it stated that the service was already running. For others, there were no topic results.

When I Googled the items, there were only questions from a lot of people with no answers.

I'm attaching the newest log. I hope it give you some clue into what might be going on with my pc.

Have a sneeky feeling that disabling some services as you mentioned has broken some applications and services and has a direct link to your other issue of non-opening links.

mscofig is more a troubleshooting tool and not really a startup manager.

With that many various errors, without sitting infront of your PC I would be suspecting a corrupt OS, re-enable the items in msconfig you have disabled and also any services you have disabled and see if they resolve some of these errors in event logs...

    Hi Halo,

I ran the Norton program but I don't know if it helped yet or not. It's too soon to tell. I still have Symantec Core LR in Computer Management > Services.

I just turned on all items in msconfig and in Computer Management > Services. A few of them wouldn't turn on:

ASP.NET State Service: Could not start ASP.NET State Service on Local Computer
Error 14001:This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.
(I believe this is .NETFramework 2.0. It was causing havoc with my video programs so I uninstalled it and have .NETFramework 1.0)

Human Interface Device Access: Could not start the service Human Interface Device Access service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the specified file. (I don't know why the file is missing . . . I've never heard of it.)

Net Logon and Net Meeting Remote Desktop Sharing had the same message: The NL and NMRDS services on Local Computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.

Routing & Remote Access: Windows could not start the Routing Access on Local Computer. For more info, review System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft Service, contact the service vendor or refer to service-specific error code 340.

Telephony: Could not stop the telephony service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner.

Uninterrupted Power Supply: Could not start the Uninterrupted Power Supply service on Local Computer
Error 2481: The Uninterrupted Power Supply service is not configured correctly.

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing: (I didn’t turn this on because I have Sygate Firewall)

Windows OneCare: Could not start the Windows One Care Live service on Local Computer.
Error 3: The System cannot find the path specified.
(I uninstalled this program but it hasn't been removed from Services)

Wouldnt worry about the ones that didnt come back on, as most are not needed, the one that does worry me a bit is OneCare and its service, how did you uninstall OneCare was it via that application or guide you mentioned in your other thread?

SO are things seeming to be ok after running that removal tool Steve mentioned in the other thread?

I originally uninstalled OneCare Live using Add/Remove Programs.

In Services, Symantec Core LC's path is

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

When I double clicked Symantec Core LC, the name Symantec Core LC is given.

Windows OneCare Live has the name Windows OneCare Live when double clicked. There was no path for this program.

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to use the < >, so I did it both ways, with and without them. Each time, the command box opened for a second and then closed.

I rebooted and both services are still in the list.

Can I just delete the Symantec file or would that cause problems with my pc again?

    I turned off Messenger.

My pc runs much faster since I started up all services and used the link that Steve gave me to uninstall Norton.

Yeah, symlcsvc.exe belongs to either Norton Internet Security or NAV 2004. I think you can safely remove that one.

You did create a restore point, just in case.

Which version XP home or pro, if home then you will need to boot into safe mode, to remove those services.

but from the command prompt it woud be this for the Symantec service...

sc delete symlcsvc < cut and paste the bold bit into the command window.

strange on the OneCare service, with having no Servce Name ( dont need a path to the file just the Service Name at the top ), if this method doesnt work see if the Service Names for Symantec and OneCare are in the registry location I mentioned in other thread.

    Hi Steve and Halo,

I have XP Pro. I created a restore point last night after everything was working well and I ran all of my anti-virus/adware/trojan/spyware programs, and I cleaned my C drive using a few programs and defragged.

Windows OneCare Live had the name Windows OneCare Live when I double clicked on it. It just didn't have a path as Symantec Core LC has.

I cut and pasted sc delete symlcsvc into the run box but it didn't delete the file. The command box blinked on for a second and went out. I opened dos using cmd and instead of opening to C:\documents and settings\owner, it opened to C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER (The switch from C:\documents and settings\owner to C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER might have happened when I gave it command prompts to place svchost.exe back into the system32 folder.) I typed cmd in the run box and then typed sc delete symlcsvc at the prompt and got a message that said "The specified service does not exist as an installed service." When I tried to exit dos, I received one of those messages that said "Windows cannot end this program. It may need more time to complete an operation. To return to Windows and check the status . . . ," so I clicked the End Now button.

Can I delete the Symantec Shared folder or should I just delete the symlcsvc.exe file, or just leave it alone?

How do I change C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER back to C:\documents and settings\owner?

What can I do so that dos will close properly?

    Hi Steve,

I copied and pasted sc delete "Symantec Core LC" in the Run box and dos blinked open and shut again and the folder was still there.

I downloaded the 3 files and followed the directions. The last box that opened after I ran NSIFIX.bat was that I successfully cleaned Norton (not exact wordage). The last one I ran, SYMMSICLEANUP.reg, asked if I wanted to add it to my registry, I clicked yes, and received a message that said that it was added to my registry.

I then rebooted but I still have symlcsvc.exe along with
    symlceng.dll,
    symlcnet.dll,
    symlcsys(2)(3).dll
    symlcsys(2)(4).dll
    symlcsys(3)(3).dll
    symlcsys(4)(3).dll
    symlcsys(5)(3).dll
    symlcsys(6)(3).dll
    symlcsys(7)(3).dll
    symlcsys(8)(3).dll
    symlcsys(9)(3).dll
    symlcsys(10)(3).dll
    symlcsys(11)(3).dll
    symlcsys(12)(3).dll
    symlcsys(13)(3).dll
    symlcsys(14)(2).dll
    symlcsys.dll

Killbox removed the Symantec Shared folder. I tried the programs first in regular mode but the folder remained. When I went into Safe Mode, the first removal program I tried was Killbox and it deleted it.

Norton is a stubborn program to remove. Thanks for all your help . . . it's more than appreciated! :D

    Hi Denise ( I see new angel avatar .... neat :) )

Glad we could help... so is your PC running OK now? ( Steve LMAO, its was team effort as usual )

I'd be tempted now to run CCLeaner and run your Defrag app to clear up any junk and fragments and your PC should be fine.

Anything else and just holler.... :)

    Sheesh! My avatar isn't an angel . . . she's a fairy . . . see? no halo

Yup, it sure was a team effort and thank you both for all your help. I definitely couldn't have done it without you guys. And I'll be back, I'm sure. I'm too inquisitive for my own good, and I still have the barebones kit to put together. I got the RAM in the mail yesterday and all I need now is the anti-static wristband (which should have arrived by now) and I'll be all set to go, and then I'll practically live here . . . just thought I'd give y'all fair warning.

Ooops! I guess I need eye test again :( still its nice calming pic :)

Hey look forward to your building this PC, is it your first self build?

    Hi Halo,

Yeah, I'm kind've into fairies (really faeries) and other wee folk. I have a collection of figurines and picture prints on my walls. It's a great world they live in. :)

The pc kit is the first one I'm going to be putting together. My son made my present pc for me about 4 years ago. He went to a trade high school and took to electronics like a fish to water. . . made the National Honor Society in his Sophmore year, was President of the NHS in his Junior and Senior years and won a 4-year scholarship to a local community college. He loved it. Ok, enough bragging about him, tho it's easy for me to do. :)

But he's not here to give me a hand with this one so I'll be turning to y'all to get all the advice I can get. If it wasn't for waiting for the wristband to arrive in the mail, I would've started this weekend.

    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2226940&Sku=B450-2305 A

I got it for $20.00 less than it's listed for now. And I bought a set of 2 Kingston dual channel 512Mb DDR (sold the one that came with the kit at eBay), Windows XP 64-bit, Seagate 300G ATA IDE 8Mb Cache Internal Hard Drive (not the best but it'll do for a while until I go SATA), and a BenQ 16x Double Layer DVD±RW IDE DVD Burner. It's going to be one h*ll of a ride putting it together!

It took me over a year to save for this pc and I'm glad I waited. Technology's come so much further this past year. In another year, my pc will be outdated, if it isn't already, but I'm going to enjoy it to the max . . . if I can get it running

Oh, I also found the posts where someone gave me a link to get rid of Norton and one to download AVG, posts 9, 10 and 11 . . .

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=95370&highlight=regseeker

You should get a kick out of post #24 Steve :)

Talk to you guys later . . . Denise
